Default vsmon.exe apparently not running

First noticed that the ZA icon wasn't in the system tray. A virus scan (AVG free) identified 10 items it classified as trojan horse; all were ZoneLabs vsmon.exe. I let AVG remove all these items.

After this I found that my browsers (Firefox2 and IE7) couldn't access the Internet. No problem with email (Outlook) and utilities that connect to the Internet. Just the browsers.

Finally, in Windows task manager: zlclient.exe is running, but vsmon.exe flashes on for about half a second, disappears for two or three seconds, appears again for half a second, disappears, etc., etc.

I would be grateful for any guidance on what I should do now.

Operating System:Windows 2000 Pro
Software Version:
Product Name:ZoneAlarm (Free)

I had the same issue yesterday and can't get zonealarm to run. I can't reinstall. It keeps wanting to reboot. It says disable truvector which I can't find running.

I solved the problem by doing a clean uninstall, then reinstalling ZA. I followed the steps described at this link:

Sorry I should have added XP SP2, AVG 8.0.173, Best guess on ZL is version 7.0. This is what AVG says Trojan horse Agent_r.cx

c:\windows\system32\zonelabs\lib\licenseui.zip.dll , also insert thes after lib\ configwizard.zip.dll, also zui.zip.dll, also zpy.zip.dll, also zlsvc.zip.dll

Same thing I got. The steps I linked to in my previous post did the trick.

Here is a List of the Most common User problems..
a.) The first thing a Hacker, Trojan or Virus tries to do if they infect your computer or gain access to your Computer, thru an Email Attachment or pop-up on a Website or user over-ridding the Security alerts by the firewall, is to shutdown, any Firewall, AV/AS..

That is why some users have problems updating ZoneAlarm or any other security program..vsmon.exe/TrueVector is the first thing that loads when your computer starts to boot up, the ZA tray Icon is just a Icon that loads later in the Boot-up process..
and TrueVector /vsmon.exe is the last thing to shutdown when your computer shuts down to insure that your computer is always protected..

That is why
" if Load ZoneAlarm on startup in not Un-checked" and computer Rebooted, Truevector will stay in Memory and will not be removed during Install or Upgrade, in fact the install may fail because Truevector in an attempt to protect your computer will think that the New Install attempt to install a new version of Truevector may be a Hacker Attempting to shut down Truevector..
That is why it is very Important to use the Un-Check "Start ZA on Startup" method so that a New Upgrade Copy of TrueVector/vsmon.exe can be installed..
b.) some Computer Users think

http://s118.photobucket.com/albums/o...2/th_1what.gif

that if one Firewall and anti-Virus is good, two or three different ones running at the same time must be better?

5.)- have you properly un-installed any previous firewall and/or anti-virus?? = this needs to be done - http://forums.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/...message.id=154
. Most new pc/laptops come with pre-installed security software, which should be properly un-installed prior to installing any ZoneAlarm firewall product.

Just One, Not Two -- Never use two software Firewalls at the same time. Completely uninstall one before installing another. Use the vendor's uninstall utility or if not available, use the Windows XP add/remove software tool in the control panel.
Just One, Not Two -- Never use two anti-virus products at the same time. Thank you, Prof. Very helpful.

One puzzle: If the ZA icon doesn't show in the tray -- which is what happened in my case -- is there another way to open the ZA control center? Need to do that in order to uncheck the startup box.

Thanks again.

Problem with this instruction: "Right click the ZoneAlarm systray icon and click Restore ZoneAlarm Control Center. Go to Overview > Preferences and uncheck Load ZoneAlarm at startup."

In my case, the systray icon wasn't there. As I asked in a nearby post, is there any way to open the ZA Control Center when the tray icon is missing?

I took ZA off the startup HKLM/Run menu before uninstalling ZA. That apparently worked.
