Default Zone Alarm Pro upgrade/uninstall/install issues

    Hi all,
Sorry if this is the incorrect place or format, I've just registered and don't really know my way around yet.
Anyways, I recieved a message from ZA to update. I cannot remember what version I was running, but it was probably the latest one.
After installation, I ended up system restoring to a few days previous to fix another program's problems. I figured ZA would either stay the current version or roll back to before I updated it.
The problem is, after restoring the system and reloading my OS, ZoneAlarm seems to have disappeared from the taskbar. It does not load up at startup like it normally should. I tried a few more system restores to see if they could fix the problem but they did not. I tried to uninstall ZA but it did not let me do that either. It continuously gives me this "True Vector" issue that I need to close/find this program before I can uninstall it. I then tried to downgrade and I got the exact same problem. I cannot access the internet and MSN Messenger is being blocked completely.
I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2I cannot tell you what version of ZA
I have installed at the moment because it no longer shows up in taskbar nor loads when I try to run if from the desktop.
    Any help would be appreciated

    Operating System:Windows XP Pro
    Product Name:ZoneAlarm Pro

Hi!system restore can corrupt ZA, you will need to remove ZA manually and reinstall.First remove ZA from XP add/remove programs (if there and if possible) then:01.) Restart your computer
02.) When you see the screen go black and it starts booting back up keep
tapping the "F8" key (at the top of your keyboard)
03.) This should bring up a menu. Choose Safe Mode off the menu by
using the arrow keys on the keyboard to highlight Safe Mode and press
    Enter
04.) If you get a message asking to go to Safe Mode, choose Yes. If you
get a help and support window, close this.
05.) Once you are at the desktop, Click Start, My Computer
06.) Click Tools, Folder Options, View Tab
07.) Place a dot next to "Show Hidden Files and Folders"
08.) Remove the check from "Hide Protected Operating System Files
    (Recommended)"
09.) Choose Yes to the warning
    10.) Click OK
    11.) Double click C:

Note: In the future steps if you do not see any files or folders, please click
the "Show Files" link to view them.

12.) Double Click the Program Files Folder
13.) Right Click the Zone Labs Folder, click Delete, and choose Yes

NOTE: If you cannot delete the entire folder, please open the Zone Labs -
    > ZoneAlarm folder and delete out as many of the files listed here as
    possible.

    14.) Close this window
    15.) Click Start, My Computer
    16.) Double Click the C:
17.) Double Click the Windows Folder (It may also be WinNT)
18.) Right Click the Internet Logs Folder, click Delete, and choose Yes
19.) Double Click the System32 Folder
20.) Right Click the Zone Labs Folder, click Delete, and choose Yes

NOTE: If you cannot delete the entire folder, please open the Zone Labs
folder and delete out as many of the files listed here as possible.

21.) Locate and delete the following files in the System32 folder if they are
    present:

    - vsconfig.xml
    - vsxml.dll
    - vsregexp.dll
    - vsdata.dll
    - vsdata95.vxd
    - vsdatant.sys
    - vsmonapi.dll
    - vspubapi.dll
    - vsinit.dll
    - vsutil.dll
    - vswmi.dll
    - zlcommdb.dll
    - zlcomm.dll
    - z llictbl.dat
    - zpeng24.dll

22.) Clear your Temp Directory per the instructions below.

    - Go to Start -> Run
    - Type %temp% and click OK
    - Select all of these files and delete them

23.) Clear the Prefetch folder per the instructions below.

    - Go to Start -> Run
    - Type Prefetch and click OK
    - Select all of these files and delete them

24.) Remove the following registry entries by going to Start -> Run and
typing in regedit. Use the folders on the left side of the window to navigate
    to the specified directories.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Zone Labs
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\vsmon
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\vsdatant

*Important Advisory: Deleting registry entries incorrectly may cause
serious problems to your operating system, which may necessitate the
need to reinstall it. Please make sure you are able to perform these
deletions correctly before you decide to edit the entries. If you are not
sure, you should seek help from someone who is familiar with editing the
    registry.

For information about how to edit the registry in Windows, from your
desktop, click Start >> Run >> and type regedit. Click on Help >> Help
Topics. Under the Contents tab, click Change Keys and Values (this may
be found under the How to... section).

Also, you should always make a backup of the registry before editing it.
You can find this in the same section of the Help files.

25.) Close this window, then empty your recycle bin.
    26.) Restart the computer.
Now you should be able to reinstall ZA without issues.Cheers,Fax

    Thank you ,thank you,thank you
I followed your instructions with some minor differences.
F8 would not work for me, so I had to run "msconfig" and select safe boot for next restart.I have XP home addition.
    Again thank you

    Guru, et al:

I experienced EXACTLY the same symptoms as Conceptor yesterday while applying the latest ZA Pro update on my XP/SP 2 system.

Since neither a /clean ZAP Uninstall or an XP Add/Remove Programs were successful I followed your instructions to Conceptor to the letter.
My system is a single user setup (I have Admin permissions).
    Windows XP Firewall is disabled.

    My results were as follow:

    a) I got "Access Denied" on all but a few of the Program Files\Zone Labs and
    Windows\System32
folders so that cleanup was only partially effective.

    b)
Regedit would not allow me to delete any of the predefined HKEYs.
    (I used right-click >>
    Delete on each Key folder.)

I attempted to install from the ZAP Backup CD and got an installation "ERROR: You do not have access to make the required system configuration modifications.
Please rerun this installation from an administrator's account."
I also saw a "cannot access vsmon" message.

My hunch is that if I could purge the three ZAP HKEYS that the installer might work.
I've had ZAP running flawlessly and updating regularly for a couple of years.
    This glitch has me stumped!

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
I don't care to go without a firewall!

    Thanks fro your help!

    Hi there,

I downloaded the latest version of Zone Alarm Pro, because I got a message saying I should do so. I have a PC running Windows XP, Service Pack 2. Of course, the same problems others mentioned occurred. I have the "Z" icon in my system tray, but Zone Alarm isn't functioning. If I follow the instructions given by guru fax, how do I re-install version 7? Where do I get it from? It's now gone from my computer, and if I go on the website to download, it wants to charge me, but my subscription isn't expired.

    Help, please!

    Thanks

    Hi Fax,

I followed all those directions, and I was able to uninstall ZAP new version and reinstall version 7. I wish they had tested this new version before recommending that we upgrade. I spent about 2 hours on this today!

Thanks very much for your help,

    Dana
