    Default Install problems

I attempted to upgrade from 7.0.483 to the newer version the other day. The upgrade failed without any error messages but ZA Anti-Virus did not fully
load on reboot although the zlclient.exe process showed in Task Manager.I tried uninstalling ZA AV but it could not shut down the True Vector client. I was successful in ending the process in Task Mgr.Because there were consistent problems with IE 7 every time I tried to use it, I attempted a System Restore to 2 different dates before yesterday without any improvement. When I tried to uninstall ZA in order to reinstall,
I received the messageThe file C:\Windows|System32\Zone Labs\vsmon.exe could not be opened.
Finally, I used the manual method to
remove all traces of ZA from the computer (deleting ZA folder in Program Files, removing files in System32 folder, clearing Temp, clearing prefetch and removing entries from the registry). After a reboot, I tried reinstalling. I got the error:You do not have access to make the required system configuration modifications. Please rerun this installation from an administrator account.
My account is an administrator account so this added to my frustration.
I found some suggestions on the FAQs and tried those:My account is an administrator account.I shut down SpySweeper, which is the only other application that might interfere with registry changesI confirmed that the Administrator group, my user ID and the System user ID all have Full Control and Read privileges to the
    Zone Labs registry key.
I tried running the install of 7.0.483 again (don't have the newer version download any longer) and get the same message about needing admin rights. I have also tried running from my almost year-old CD original version, with the same results.
Now I have no firewall or AV protection and have turned off my Spyware protection, so I can't use the PC. What else am I to do?

The simplest procedure is to:1.Download the Latestinstallerpreferably with IE Browwserand no Download Manager/accelerator like Get-Right) ZAFree http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/fre...seHistory.htmlZAP http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/fr...seHistory.html ZAAV http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/fr...seHistory.htmlZAAS http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/fr...seHistory.htmlZASS http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/fr...seHistory.html2. On your current ZA, UNcheck "Load ZA... at startup" (under Overview --> Preferences tab)3. Reboot the Computer. So that vsmon.exe/TrueVector will be removed from Memory4. Install the new update (clean or upgrade) and Accept the default Setting, Auto-Learn Mode and Choose Trusted Zone, not Internet Zone..Please note that ZASS does not play nice with many overlapping security tools (even if disabled). To troubleshoot ZASS issues remove them and install back once you see that ZA works as it should. For example, spyspweeper, spyware doctor, trojan hunter, adware, SpyBotS&D, PC tools Threatfire, otherantivirus, antispyware, registry locking tools, etc...Here is a List of the Most common User problems..a.) The first thing a Hacker, Trojan or Virus tries to do if they infect your computer or gain access to your Computer, thru an Email Attachment or pop-up on a Website or user over-ridding the Security alerts by the firewall, is to shutdown, any Firewall, AV/AS.. That is why some users have problems updating ZoneAlarm or any other security program..vsmon.exe/TrueVector is the first thing that loads when your computer starts to boot up, the ZA tray Icon is just a Icon that loads later in the Boot-up process..and TrueVector /vsmon.exe is the last thing to shutdown when your computer shuts down to insure that your computer is always protected..That is why " if Load ZoneAlarm on startup in not Un-checked" and computer Rebooted, Truevector will stay in Memory and will not be removed during Install or Upgrade, in fact the install may fail because Truevector in an attempt to protect your computer will think that the New Install attempt to install a new version of Truevector may be a Hacker Attempting to shut down Truevector..That is why it is very Important to use the Un-Check "Start ZA on Startup" method so that a New Upgrade Copy of TrueVector/vsmon.exe can be installed..--------------------This applies to

    All ZoneAlarm products

    Summary

I need to completely remove ZoneAlarm, or there are remnants of
    ZoneAlarm on my system

    Solution

If possible, first try to uninstall ZoneAlarm normally from your Start ->
Programs -> ZoneAlarm menu. If this fails, or you want to ensure that all
ZoneAlarm files were removed from the system properly, continue with the
    steps below.

Please make sure that you have the latest version downloaded first:

    http://www.zonealarm.com/trial

    01.) Restart your computer
02.) When you see the screen go black and it starts booting back up keep
tapping the "F8" key (at the top of your keyboard)
03.) This should bring up a menu. Choose Safe Mode off the menu by
using the arrow keys on the keyboard to highlight Safe Mode and press
    Enter
04.) If you get a message asking to go to Safe Mode, choose Yes. If you
get a help and support window, close this.
05.) Once you are at the desktop, Click Start, My Computer
06.) Click Tools, Folder Options, View Tab
07.) Place a dot next to "Show Hidden Files and Folders"
08.) Remove the check from "Hide Protected Operating System Files
    (Recommended)"
09.) Choose Yes to the warning
    10.) Click OK
    11.) Double click C:

Note: In the future steps if you do not see any files or folders, please click
the "Show Files" link to view them.

12.) Double Click the Program Files Folder
13.) Right Click the Zone Labs Folder (if present), click Delete, and choose
    Yes

NOTE: If you cannot delete the entire folder, please open the Zone Labs -
    > ZoneAlarm folder and delete out as many of the files listed here as
    possible.

    14.) Close this window
    15.) Click Start, My Computer
    16.) Double Click the C:
17.) Double Click the Windows Folder (It may also be WinNT)
18.) Right Click the Internet Logs Folder, click Delete, and choose Yes
19.) Double Click the System32 Folder
20.) Right Click the Zone Labs Folder (if present), click Delete, and choose
    Yes

NOTE: If you cannot delete the entire folder, please open the Zone Labs
folder and delete out as many of the files listed here as possible.

21.) Locate and delete the following files in the System32 folder if they are
    present:

    - vsconfig.xml
    - vsxml.dll
    - vsregexp.dll
    - vsdata.dll
    - vsdata95.vxd

    - Type Prefetch and click OK
    - Select all of these files and delete them

24.) Remove the necessary registry entries:

*Important Advisory: Deleting registry entries incorrectly may cause
serious problems to your operating system, which may necessitate the
need to reinstall it. Please make sure you are able to perform these
deletions correctly before you decide to edit the entries. If you are not
sure, you should seek help from someone who is familiar with editing the
    registry.

For information about how to edit the registry in Windows, from your
desktop, click Start -> Run -> and type regedit. Click on Help -> Help
Topics. Under the Contents tab, click Change Keys and Values (this may
be found under the How to... section).

Also, you should always make a backup of the registry before editing it.
You can find this in the same section of the Help files.

To remove the needed registry entries, go to Start -> Run and type in
regedit. Choose OK, and use the folders on the left side of the Registry
Editor window to navigate to the specified directories below. Note that you
will remove the entire folder specified (eg, Zone Labs, vsmon, vsdatant):

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Zone Labs
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\vsmon
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\vsdatant

25.) Close this window, then empty your recycle bin.
    26.) Restart the computer.
27.) Try to install the latest version again=======================--------------------------------------------------------

    Default Re: Install problems

    GeorgeV,
I'm sorry to say that the suggestions you offered are not at all useful for my present situation
although I will certainly follow them for future upgrades.
The problem now is that I cannot install any version of ZAAV because the installer insists that I do not have administrator rights, which is not true.
As previously outlined, I have disabled SpySweeper so that it does not load at start up. I have confirmed that both the Administrator group (which I am part of) and my user ID have Full Access and Read rights on the registry key. I do not know what else I can do to resolve the problem. These are the steps suggested in the FAQ for this problem.
    I
    had already
removed every trace of ZA following the FAQ instructions before posting so your inclusion
of that information did not add anything new to a solution.
I have not been able to find any other information related to this issue that would help me get farther.
    Thank you,Tom
