Default Free ZoneAlarm freezes my internet after update

To make a long story short, my ZoneAlarm I have been using for 6 months which has never caused me any problems gave me a message Thursday
a update was available, I updated.
When restarting my computer it took about 15 minutes for my Window XP to show the desktop and I got a error message regarding
"True Vector".
Thereafter when I tried to get on the internet (DSL) it works fine for about 3 minutes and then I can go no further, it will not download any web pages, it freezes up and times out.

I tried to uninstall ZoneAlarm using the Add/Remove Programs and it gave me error message it could not uninstall due to True Vector.
Then after browsing this forum, I followed directions on how to completely remove ZoneAlarm on my system, however there were a large number of files that would not delete with error message "access denied".
Then after deleting everything I could (ZoneAlarm, temp directory, prefetch directory) I restarted my computer and it now comes up with a message from ZoneAlarm my 14 day trial will end soon, and my internet does the same thing, works fine for 3-5 minutes and then freezes and locks up.
I tried to do a system restore and it does not help.
When I try to start my computer in Safe Mode for some reason I can't get the arrows to move to highlight Safe Mode, and num lock is off too.
Can anyone help me?
I considered reinstalling ZoneAlarm, but I was afraid I would screw it up even more.
I am about ready to take my computer to the shop!

http://s118.photobucket.com/albums/o...h_1welcome.gif to the Zone Alarm User Forum..Sorry your having a problem with the UPdate of ZAFree..1.) it sounds like you got in a hurry and tried to Install the New Upgrade over the old Active Firewall..if TrueVector (vsmon.exe) is not properly shutdown, (Za Overview/Preferences Uncheck "Load ZA on Startup" and Reboot computer to shut down TrueVector) before the new install, then it will Block being over written by the new version of TrueVector..
a.) The first thing a Hacker, Trojan or Virus tries to do if they infect your computer or gain access to your Computer, thru an Email Attachment or pop-up on a Website or user over-ridding the Security alerts by the firewall, is to shutdown, any Firewall, AV/AS.. That is why some users have problems updating ZoneAlarm or any other security program..vsmon.exe/TrueVector is the first thing that loads when your computer starts to boot up, the ZA tray Icon is just a Icon that loads later in the Boot-up process..and TrueVector /vsmon.exe is the last thing to shutdown when your computer shuts down to insure that your computer is always protected..That is why " if Load ZoneAlarm on startup in not Un-checked" and computer Rebooted, Truevector will stay in Memory and will not be removed during Install or Upgrade, in fact the install may fail because Truevector in an attempt to protect your computer will think that the New Install attempt to install a new version of Truevector may be a Hacker Attempting to shut down Truevector..That is why it is very Important to use the Un-Check "Start ZA on Startup" method so that a New Upgrade Copy of TrueVector/vsmon.exe can be installed..===================================2.) Here is the Explaination of the 14 day expire Notice..)Here is a Clue for Users of ZAFree for WinXP..all version of ZAFree for Win XP ever since the First ZAFree Ver. 7.0 & Ver. 8.0 contain the full Trial of ZA Security Suite.. 44.6Mb, nearly three times bigger than the original ZAFree Ver 6.0,this is a Marketing Ploy to offer FRee users a chance to try the 15 day trial of the Full Security Suite, even though durring the Install process you can Decline the Free Trial of the Security Suite,======================You need to Pay Very Close attension to the Install process..and do not agree to the Free trail of the Security Suite..Here is a more detailed Uninstall process..This applies to

All ZoneAlarm products
Windows 2000/XP

Summary

I need to completely remove ZoneAlarm, or there are remnants of
ZoneAlarm on my system

Solution

If possible, first try to uninstall ZoneAlarm normally from your Start ->
Programs -> ZoneAlarm menu. If this fails, or you want to ensure that all
ZoneAlarm files were removed from the system properly, continue with the
steps below.

Please make sure that you have the latest version downloaded first:

http://www.zonealarm.com/trial

01.) Restart your computer
02.) When you see the screen go black and it starts booting back up keep
tapping the "F8" key (at the top of your keyboard)
03.) This should bring up a menu. Choose Safe Mode off the menu by
using the arrow keys on the keyboard to highlight Safe Mode and press
Enter
04.) If you get a message asking to go to Safe Mode, choose Yes. If you
get a help and support window, close this.
05.) Once you are at the desktop, Click Start, My Computer
06.) Click Tools, Folder Options, View Tab
07.) Place a dot next to "Show Hidden Files and Folders"
08.) Remove the check from "Hide Protected Operating System Files
(Recommended)"
09.) Choose Yes to the warning
10.) Click OK
11.) Double click C:

Note: In the future steps if you do not see any files or folders, please click
the "Show Files" link to view them.

12.) Double Click the Program Files Folder
13.) Right Click the Zone Labs Folder (if present), click Delete, and choose
Yes

NOTE: If you cannot delete the entire folder, please open the Zone Labs -
> ZoneAlarm folder and delete out as many of the files listed here as
possible.

14.) Close this window
15.) Click Start, My Computer
16.) Double Click the C:
17.) Double Click the Windows Folder (It may also be WinNT)
18.) Right Click the Internet Logs Folder, click Delete, and choose Yes
19.) Double Click the System32 Folder
20.) Right Click the Zone Labs Folder (if present), click Delete, and choose
Yes

NOTE: If you cannot delete the entire folder, please open the Zone Labs
folder and delete out as many of the files listed here as possible.

21.) Locate and delete the following files in the System32 folder if they are
present:

- vsconfig.xml
- vsxml.dll
- vsregexp.dll
- vsdata.dll
- vsdata95.vxd
- vsdatant.sys
- vsmonapi.dll
- vspubapi.dll
- vsinit.dll
- vsutil.dll
- vswmi.dll
- zlcommdb.dll
- zlcomm.dll
- **bleep**.dat

22.) Clear your Temp Directory per the instructions below.

- Go to Start -> Run
- Type %temp% and click OK
- Select all of these files and delete them

23.) Clear the Prefetch folder per the instructions below (Windows XP only).

- Go to Start -> Run
- Type Prefetch and click OK
- Select all of these files and delete them

24.) Remove the necessary registry entries:

*Important Advisory: Deleting registry entries incorrectly may cause
serious problems to your operating system, which may necessitate the
need to reinstall it. Please make sure you are able to perform these
deletions correctly before you decide to edit the entries. If you are not
sure, you should seek help from someone who is familiar with editing the
registry.

For information about how to edit the registry in Windows, from your
desktop, click Start -> Run -> and type regedit. Click on Help -> Help
Topics. Under the Contents tab, click Change Keys and Values (this may
be found under the How to... section).

Also, you should always make a backup of the registry before editing it.
You can find this in the same section of the Help files.

To remove the needed registry entries, go to Start -> Run and type in
regedit. Choose OK, and use the folders on the left side of the Registry
Editor window to navigate to the specified directories below. Note that you
will remove the entire folder specified (eg, Zone Labs, vsmon, vsdatant):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Zone Labs
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\vsmon
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\vsdatant

25.) Close this window, then empty your recycle bin.
26.) Restart the computer.
27.) Try to install the latest version again

I did all of the steps I could with your detailed instructions on how to compeltely remove ZoneAlarm, I could not remove some files, got message "access denied".
I also could not remove the two registry folders vsmon and vsdatant.
Since I could not delete some of these, do you think I should now reinstall the free download for ZoneAlarm?

This will happen if the files or Programs are Running, Windows will not allow you to delete a file that is being used, or open at the time..That is why the First part of the Checkpoint ZA removal instructions tell you to do the Removal in :"SAFE MODE", so that the files and programs are not running when you remove them..

I was able to put my computer in safe mode by using msconfig, (I could not get the arrows to work for me using F8 safe mode method!) Anyway, when I was in safe mode I was able to delete all folders except for one - zlavscan.dll - otherwise I was successful in deleting everything else as per your very detailed instructions (thanks for that). Now, I am on the internet again and it seems to be fine fine fine! I don't know if I will reinstall ZoneAlarm, this has been very frustrating, I am thankful it is gone now. Do you think the one file I could not delete will cause any problems? Thanks for your help!
