Default Cannot uninstall ZA, TrueVector stops working

I'm typing this from my laptop, but two days ago,
I downloaded the update for v 8. and now my internet doesn't work.
I've seen the things folks have written about it saying the computer's protected, but UI is initializing.

I'm still getting used to this laptop.
Somehow it just sent the thread off.
    Sorry.
I've tried uninstalling, but every time the box pops up with "TrueVector has stopped working".
I've tried adding on to the Uninstall command with /clean at the end, but again TrueVector stops working and all comes to an end.
I can't get any internet on either Mozilla or IE.

I'm very frustated as I've always liked ZA and this is the first issue I've ever had with the program.

    I'm desperate for some help.
I'm running Windows Vista Home BasicService Pack 1
I can't tell if it loaded ZA 8.0 or if it's ZA 7.0

I had exactly this same thing happen. I am running Vista and after completing the latest "upgrade" I started receiving a message that "True Vector has stopped working." This seems to be some sort of death knell. Attempts to uninstall ZA are impossible because it can't seem to find True Vector to log into it. Attempts to upgrade ZA fail for the same reason. As it is, I am not sure how 'protected' I am when online and the internet service is proving sketchy at best. I feel naked. It must be Vista's fault. It's a horrible operating system. It never communicates what's going on. I can't even open ZA to adjust my preferences. It just stares at me when I try to open it. Please help.

Please note that ZASS does not play nice with many overlapping security tools (even if disabled). To troubleshoot ZASS issues remove them and install back once you see that ZA works as it should. For example, spyspweeper, spyware doctor, trojan hunter, adware, SpyBotS&D, PC tools Threatfire, otherantivirus, antispyware, registry locking tools, etc...Here is a List of the Most common User problems..a.) The first thing a Hacker, Trojan or Virus tries to do if they infect your computer or gain access to your Computer, thru an Email Attachment or pop-up on a Website or user over-ridding the Security alerts by the firewall, is to shutdown, any Firewall, AV/AS.. That is why some users have problems updating ZoneAlarm or any other security program..vsmon.exe/TrueVector is the first thing that loads when your computer starts to boot up, the ZA tray Icon is just a Icon that loads later in the Boot-up process..and TrueVector /vsmon.exe is the last thing to shutdown when your computer shuts down to insure that your computer is always protected..That is why " if Load ZoneAlarm on startup in not Un-checked" and computer Rebooted, Truevector will stay in Memory and will not be removed during Install or Upgrade, in fact the install may fail because Truevector in an attempt to protect your computer will think that the New Install attempt to install a new version of Truevector may be a Hacker Attempting to shut down Truevector..That is why it is very Important to use the Un-Check "Start ZA on Startup" method so that a New Upgrade Copy of TrueVector/vsmon.exe can be installed..==================================Here is what ZA Tech Support recomends..This applies to

    All ZoneAlarm products
    Windows Vista

    Summary

Youneed to completely remove ZoneAlarm, or there are remnants of
    ZoneAlarm on my system

    Solution

If possible, first try to uninstall ZoneAlarm normally from your Start ->
Programs -> ZoneAlarm menu. If this fails, or you want to ensure that all
ZoneAlarm files were removed from the system properly, continue with the
    steps below.

Please make sure that you have the latest version downloaded first:

    http://www.zonealarm.com/trial

    01.) Restart your computer
02.) When you see the screen go black and it starts booting back up keep
tapping the "F8" key (at the top of your keyboard)
03.) This should bring up a menu. Choose Safe Mode off the menu by
using the arrow keys on the keyboard to highlight Safe Mode and press
    Enter
04.) If you get a message asking to go to Safe Mode, choose Yes. If you
get a help and support window, close this.
05.) Once you are at the desktop, Click Start, Computer
06.) Click Tools, Folder Options, View Tab

NOTE: If you cannot see the menu bar with the Tools menu on it, you have
to press the Alt-key on the keyboard and the menu bar should then be
    visible.

07.) Place a dot next to "Show Hidden Files and Folders"
08.) Remove the check from "Hide Protected Operating System Files
    (Recommended)"
09.) Choose Yes to the warning
    10.) Click OK
    11.) Double click C:

Note: In the future steps if you do not see any files or folders, please click
the "Show Files" link to view them.

12.) Double Click the Program Files Folder
13.) Right Click the Zone Labs Folder, click Delete, and choose Yes

NOTE: If you cannot delete the entire folder, please open the Zone Labs -
    > ZoneAlarm folder and delete out as many of the files listed here as
    possible.

    14.) Close this window
    15.) Click Start, Computer
    16.) Double Click C:
17.) Double Click the Windows Folder
18.) Right Click the Internet Logs Folder, click Delete, and choose Yes
19.) Double Click the System32 Folder
20.) Right Click the Zone Labs Folder, click Delete, and choose Yes

NOTE: If you cannot delete the entire folder, please open the Zone Labs
folder and delete out as many of the files listed here as possible.

21.) Locate and delete the following files in the System32 folder if they are
    present:

    - vsconfig.xml
    - vsxml.dll
    - vsregexp.dll
    - vsdata.dll
    - vsdata95.vxd
    - vsdatant.sys
    - vsmonapi.dll
    - vspubapi.dll
    - vsinit.dll
    - vsutil.dll
    - vswmi.dll
    - zlcommdb.dll
    - zlcomm.dll
    - zpeng24.dll

22.) Clear your Temp Directory per the instructions below.

    - Go to Start -> Run
    - Type %temp% and click OK
    - Select all of these files and delete them

23.) Clear the Prefetch folder per the instructions below.

    - Go to Start -> Run
    - Type Prefetch and click OK
    - Select all of these files and delete them

NOTE: If you do not have the Run option on the Start menu, you can press
and hold the Windows logo key and tap the letter R .

24.) Remove the necessary registry entries:

*Important Advisory: Deleting registry entries incorrectly may cause
serious problems to your operating system, which may necessitate the
need to reinstall it. Please make sure you are able to perform these
deletions correctly before you decide to edit the entries. If you are not
sure, you should seek help from someone who is familiar with editing the
    registry.

For information about how to edit the registry in Windows, from your
desktop, click Start -> Run -> and type regedit. Click on Help -> Help
Topics. Under the Contents tab, click Change Keys and Values (this may
be found under the How to... section).

Also, you should always make a backup of the registry before editing it.
You can find this in the same section of the Help files.

To remove the needed registry entries, go to Start -> Run and type in
regedit. Choose OK, and use the folders on the left side of the Registry
Editor window to navigate to the specified directories below. Note that you
will remove the entire folder specified (eg. Zone Labs, vsmon, vsdatant):

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Zone Labs
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\vsmon
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\vsdatant

25.) Close this window, then empty your recycle bin.
    26.) Restart the computer.
27.) Try to install the latest version again.

    Hi Jametz,
I have the same problem. I tried installing ZA internet security suite 8 and it nearly crippled my Windows XP Pro system. I can not even uninstall ZA internet security squite. Now I am left with no protection.
    I am very upset.

Timandrue has described my situation precisely.

While I appreciate the extensive info that GeorgeV sent along, it's the same thing I've seen on these boards.

Here's the continuous circle I stand it - first, I can't unclick to not start ZA when restarting the computer because I can't open ZA - TrueVector not working will not allow that.

With regards to starting in Safe Mode, I did that (albeit without having clicked to not start ZA when restarting), but I went ahead and rebooted into Safe Mode.
Now, the Tools menu does not appear, even while pressing the Alt key (either by itself or at the same time as the Start key).
    Hence, I thwarted there too.
It may well be a Vista issue, but I can't get through on the Internet to see if there are updates for Vista.
    I'm stuck, period.

I'm now on the computer with the problem. It seems the internet will work as long as I don't try to run the Zone Alarm update. Right now, I'm using Windows Firewall, so it appears ZA is turned off. I'd still like to be able to uninstall the program (and I'm not sure I'll reinstall it until this huge problem is resolved). But for the moment, the Internet is running.

This has been a huge frustration and disappointment. I've run ZA for years and have never had a problem. You would think that prior to the update, it would suggest that you verify your Vista updates, etc. (which I have done with the open Internet).

    I have the same problem.
Ran an update and my XP pc failed to restart correctly.
    Had to use system restore.
Now my internet will not work correctly.
Tried to uninstall ZA and it won't.
    True Vector causing problems.
    Tried your safe mode procedure.
Cannot delete all the files required.
    At a loss!
Somehow need to get rid of True Vector.

    Hi,

looks like you guys are having a similar problem as I'm having.

Initially my PC (Running XP SP2) was booting up but I was losing the internet after about 5 minutes and then later on on startup I was left staring at my desktop background for 15 minutes until it finally decided to boot. I thought it was a virus/spyware and did actually manage to clean up a few minor issues, but the situation remained.

I tried to uninstall Zone Alarm in case there was a conflict with little success as TrueVector could not be shut down. Eventually I managed to delete all references to Zone Alarm in the registry and files and finally uninstalled in Safe Mode. Only after this, could I access the internet properly.

After a few more virus and spyware scans, and declaring the PC clean, did I attempt to reinstall the latest Zone Alarm. On restart, I was faced again with 15 minutes of my desktop background (It's my cat, in case you are interested) and no internet.

This time I managed to uninstall on the first attempt, but am now left with Windows firewall until I can find a solution to reinstall Zone Alarm so that it works. I'm guessing that it's conflicting with something I already have installed, but I'm not sure what it's conflicting with. I'm not 100% sure, but am pretty certain that my problems started after Zone Alarm's last update.

    Any suggestions anyone?

    Cheers

    Rick
