Default Downgraded to zonealarm 7.0.483 , not sure if I dare go back to ZA 8

I have been using zone alarm for a while now but since installing ZA 8 I have had some serious performance issues with the pc, clicking on start , run then cmd / calc was taking several seconds to open , opening directories and navigating to places were also reacting really slowly
and the PC has completely died
several times
and only recovered after leaving for several minute before it
became responsive again despite task manager showing noting holding the CPU soI can only presume it was disk activity holding up the PC
I checked the
event logs just after having the problems and it shows an unexpected crash of zonealarm although I did not get any messages on screem
I had tried reseting the database several times and re-installing but no change so eventually gave up and went back to 7.0.483 and it feels like I have a new pc!, everything is back to normal and no slow running , calc and command prompts open up in a flash and I have had no more freezes
only problem now..... Zonealarm shows that there is an upgrade available which will push me back to ZA 8 !, I am really wary of going back to 8 but I don't like the idea of running and old version of the firewall.

Hi!be sure to have a back of your system and also remove any security tool installed.ZA does not play nice with many other security tools. They may block its correct functioning including updates. For example, spyware doctor, spysweeper, trojan hunter, win patrol, PCtools Threat Fire, Mcafee, Norton, Symantec, Adaware, SpybotS&D, AVG, NOD, and manyothers. If you want to troubleshoot issues with ZA please remove these tools (not enough to disable) and install back (if you really need) only after you see your ZASS is working as it should.Then:1. backup your ZA settings (Overview --> preferences)2. UNcheck "Load ZA at startup" (overview --> preferences)3. Re-boot the PC4. Install the update and choose upgradeIf something goes wrong remove ZA (add/remove) , install back 7 and restore settings.Cheers,Fax

problem is that that doesn't help much , there was no problem with ZA getting updates it was with the functioning and I definitely didn't have anything installed that should have been able to affect that , also the fact that ZA 7 works fine but ZA 8 is what is annoying .
the only thing from that list that I have is Spybot and I use it for occasional extra scans so am not going to remove it , if ZA can't play nicely I am more likely to stop using it than Spybot
as far as preferences go I have never had any luck exporting then re-importing the settings as the 2-3 times that I tried ZA just said that they were corrupt
I did try
upgrading
ZA 8
and then removing and re-installing from fresh but this did not seem to be any different and I still had problems with the pc freezing up when doing simple things like opening a command prompt etc and the only reason I can think of for that is that the on access scanning was playing up and scanning when windows was checking the path to locate CMD / Calc.exe as it did seem to go away when I turned off on access scanning but I didn't want to leave it like that

Hi!ok, Thanks for the explanation. Please stop using it then and move to something you feel more confortable with.Nothing worst than running tools you do not trust.Btw SpybotS&D is not a good tool to use. Not anymore.Cheers,Fax

yes but there lies the problem, I went through quite a few firewalls before settling on zonealarm about 3+ years ago and have been happy till now with most aspects
. I don't wish to change but find it frustrating that I don't dare update at the moment also as I have said before I have been recomending zonealarm for several years to others and find it a pity that I don't feel comfortable doing so any longer.
also please provide some hard facts and reasons if you decide to comment on another product , I can think of no good reason to not use spybot especially as it is free and works great for an aditional spyware scanner, no mulware scanner is ever 100% reliable and I would always advise customers to have at least spybot and maybe one or to others that they use on a bi-weekly / monthly basis to do a scan in addition to whatever else they may have running .
certainly it is not a good Idea to run more than one firewall or on access scanner but that is something else entirely.

But remove any other security tools.

Hi Jamesjg,

After a nightmare attempt to clean a nasty piece of malware from a friend's computer, I can only strongly recommend Fax's suggestion to switch programs.

I was also a faithful Spybot believer. Spybot was able to detect the malware without a problem. However after numerous (and believe me numerous!) attempts, reboots and scans from safe mode Spybot could not remove the malware.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware solved the problem. My limited experience is consistent with the general internet consensus that MBAM and Superantispyware (please see below) are the most effective anti-malware and anti-spyware programs currently.

Here is link directly from the company's website: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php

MBAM specialises in detecting and removing spyware and malware. It is NOT a substitute for a virus scanner. For that I recommend **bleep**.

In addition I can personally recommend Superantispyware (http://www.superantispyware.com/down...NTISPYWAREFREE).

Another useful tool is Hijackthis if you suspect infection (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en...wnload_exe.gif). You can post your logs in this forum or on www.hijackthis.de for analysis.

Wait for expert advice though before fixing things with HJT. The gurus on this forum will be able to better advise you.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the reply but it still misses my point a little , I run multiple occasional scans using Microsoft's Live scan, spybot & Hijack This and whatever I am playing with at the time but I don't expect them to get rid of all problems and that is why I use several - On an occasional scan basic and not as on access scanning ,
also one piece of malware that cannot be removed does not necessarilyu make a piece of software useless and the program that you switched on this occasion may have problems clearing malware that spybot can .
I have been in
IT for several years and do a bit of programming so I have a good Idea of how windows works and I am quite happy to delve into the registry myself to remove malware myself (although I do tend to believe that the only sure removal for most users is to backup and reformat anyway) , so I don't really care if programs detect and do not clear issues I just hate people saying don't use products without giving specific reasons also I use Spybot because it is free and as far as I can tell the full version requires you to pay $24
