Default Does Removal Tool (clean.exe) need to be run BEFORE uninstalling ZA? < Run After

Does the ZA "Removal Tool" (cpes_clean.exe) need to be run BEFORE
your ZA product
has been
uninstalled in any other way?
I get error messages when running this tool after doing an uninstall (where I'm just running it to "clean up" any residual files.)
Somebody else theorized that this was because the tool did not know how to run if it couldn't find a ZA product on the system.
I just wanted to confirm if this was correct since my assumption was that this file should be run after doing an uninstall.
Thanks,
Larry

This may help....

From this post: http://forums.zonealarm.org/zonelabs...ssage.id=85416

(Check text in brackets:[] - I can't find another method of highlighting specific text on this forum)

"ZAX is a completely new program, and your old ZASS license will not work with ZAX and your old ZASS settings may conflict with ZAX.

[Here is the instruction I received from Tech Support] for upgrading from ZASS to ZAX..
--------------------------------------------------------------

DO NOT RUN THE INSTALLER, UNINSTALL PREVIOUS VERSIONS FIRST.

[To uninstall] we suggest downloading and saving to your desktop our uninstall utility.

http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/fr...cpes_clean.exe

After downloading double click on the cpes_clean.exe icon on your desktop [to start the uninstall process.]

You will be asked to reboot your computer."

It would appear from the above that the uninstall utility must be run BEFORE uninstalling ZAISS (i.e. the utility does the actual de-installation process, instead of the uninstaller built-in to ZAISS). I would read into this that the uninstaller built-in to ZAISS is somehow not fully adequate, or does not perform a FULL de-installation; hence the requirement for Zone Labs to develop a utility to do this job. In any event, it seems clear that the uninstaller utility must be run BEFORE ZAISS is uninstalled.

Hope this helps a bit.

Thanks for the info.
That response (and this subject in general) begs the question of why the normal uninstall shortcut in the ZA program group
links to to
"zauninst.exe" rather than "cpes_clean.exe," or why the existence of the new "Removal Tool" is
not normally divulged to users.
If you didn't read the forum or ask tech support a question, you would never know it existed.
Even the file name makes it unclear what it is.

Here is what I recommend..

1. Download the latest ZA 12 version http://server.iad.liveperson.net/hc/...10&action=view
<== click here

2. Remove your current ZA version (in XP use Windows add/remove programs/Windows 7/8 Uninstall a program)

3. Remove other security tools installed. Use http://www.appremover.com/ to double check no left overs are present.

4. Clean your system and registry with the Free Ccleaner.exe
free ccleaner <= click here

5. Download to your desktop and run the ZA removal tool, <= click here
now reboot computer after running ZA Removal tool.

6. Now Install the latest ZA version without touching any default settings,
and Do Not Restore Saved Settings from the old install.
