    Default Virus signature updates

After upgrading to 80.298.000 the antivirus signatures will not update automatically even though I have set them to update every 3 hours.
I can manually update the signatures.
    What is wrong?

    Operating System:Windows XP Home Edition
    Software Version:8.0
    Product Name:ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite

    Default Re: Virus signature updates

On my WinXP machine 32 bit machine, the software and check for updated version runs just fine.

On Vista 64 bit, I get a Task Finished window almost immediately after clicking to update now.
    Anti-spyware:
Error: Unable to connect to update server

What one of the main posters said to do was, hold down the Shift & Ctrl keys (at same time) while right-clicking the ZAP icon, then choose Reset. Reboot, and it should reset ZAP.
You might want to give that a try, but that doesn't fix the issue on my Vista 64 bit installation.

    DELETE UPDATES AND TEMPORARY FILES:
Updating problems can be caused by corrupted update definitions files. Please follow the steps below to remove an invalid update signature, then run the update again. Please proceed with the following:

You will need to restart your pc in "Safe Mode". This can be accomplished by restarting your pc and pressing the F8 key as the PC starts up (BEFORE the first Windows screen with the black background) and then Select Safe Mode. If you have trouble restarting in safe mode please use this alternate method:
    - While in Normal Windows mode, Close all programs.
    - Click Start, Run and type MSCONFIG in the box and click OK
    - In the System Configuration Utility, on the BOOT.INI Tab and tick the "/SAFEBOOT" option in the Boot Options section.
    - Now click the OK button. After pressing the button you will be presented with an option to Restart or Exit Without Restart. Please choose the Restart option and the computer will now boot up into Safe Mode.
Note: If you get a message asking to go to Safe Mode, choose Yes. If you get a help and support window, close this.

When you are in safe mode make sure hidden files and folders are shown.
To enable viewing of hidden files open My Computer/Computer. Depending on your OS click Tools or View and then Folder Options > View. Choose "Show Hidden Files and Folders", uncheck "Hide Protected Operating System Files" (Windows 2000/XP/2003 only) and click OK.
NOTE: If you cannot see the menu bar with the Tools menu on it, you have to press the Alt-key on the keyboard and the menu bar should then be visible.

Note: In the future steps if you do not see any files or folders, please click the "Show Files" link to view them.

    1. Click Start and open My Computer/Computer
    2. Double click the Windows folder
    3. Double click the System32 folder
    4. Double click the ZoneLabs folder
    5. Double click the Updates folder
    6. Delete ALL files and folders inside this "Updates" folder
    7. Close My Computer/Computer

Close this window, then empty your recycle bin.

You will need to start the pc in normal Windows mode. If you did not use the MSCONFIG program to enter Safe Mode then just restart your pc in the normal manner.
IF and ONLY IF you used the MSCONFIG program to enter Safe Mode, please run it again and uncheck the "/SAFEBOOT" option on the BOOT.INI tab and click OK choose the option to restart your computer.

When you restart your computer you may see a prompt from the Windows System Configuration Utility. Please tick the box for "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows start:" and then click OK.

If you prefer not to always view "Hidden Files and Folders" and "Protected Operating System Files", you can reverse the steps explained earlier to disable this option.

Open ZoneAlarm and go to AntiVirus/AntiSpyware and then Main and click Update Now. If the update completes successfully you do not need to continue with the rest of the instructions below.

    PROXY CHECK:
Are you using a proxy server? Some Internet providers like TPG use proxies to connect to websites.

To check if you are using a proxy server please open Internet Explorer, go to the Tools menu, choose Internet Options and then the Connections tab.

    If You Use Dialup:
If you use dial-up, a dialup connection will be displayed in the "Dial-up and Virtual Private Network settings" area. Please select the dial-up connection and click the Settings button.
If a proxy server is being used, the "Proxy Server" section will contain a tick and there will be settings shown in the Address and Port areas. Please take a note of these settings.

If You Use Broadband or Are On a Network:
If you use Broadband or are on a network, please click the LAN Settings button.
If a proxy server is being used, the "Proxy Server" section will contain a tick and there will be settings shown in the Address and Port areas. Please take a note of these settings.

IF, and only if, you are using a proxy, please configure ZoneAlarm to the Proxy Server as well. Open ZoneAlarm and go to Overview and then Preferences and click the Options button. Under Proxy Configuration tick the "Enable Proxy Server" option and enter in the Proxy Server and Port information. When done, click the OK button and close the ZoneAlarm window.

Open ZoneAlarm and go to AntiVirus/AntiSpyware and then Main and click Update Now. If the update completes successfully you do not need to continue with the rest of the instructions below.

    UPDATE SERVERS:
The ZoneAlarm AntiVirus and/or AntiSpyware update servers may need to be added as trusted within ZoneAlarm per the steps below:

    1. Open ZoneAlarm.
    2. Click Firewall on the left.
    3. Click Zones.
    4. Click Add -> Host/Site.
    5. Enter: avu.zonelabs.com in the Host name field.
    6. For Description enter: AVUpdate.
    7. Click Lookup, then click OK.
    8. Repeat this for upd.zonelabs.com and kav.zonelabs.com
    9. Click Apply to the lower right.
    10. Restart your computer to ensure that these changes take effect.

Open ZoneAlarm and go to AntiVirus/AntiSpyware and then Main and click Update Now. If the update completes successfully you do not need to continue with the rest of the instructions below.

    CLEAN REMOVAL:
If the problem remains and the update was not successful, we recommend that you download the latest ZoneAlarm setup file (if you do not already have it) and uninstall your current ZoneAlarm installation using the following Clean uninstall method described below and then reinstall it again afterwards.

First, download and save the latest ZoneAlarm installation file (if you don't already have it):
    http://www.zonealarm.com.au/main/updates.htm

Also download and save the special "ZA_CLEAN" uninstall tool available here:
    http://www.zonealarm.com.au/special_tools/ZA_CLEAN.EXE

Once both files have finished downloading please open ZoneAlarm by going to the Windows START menu, Programs, ZoneAlarm and choose "ZoneAlarm Security". Go to Overview and then Preferences and untick "Load ZoneAlarm Security Suite at startup". Close the main ZoneAlarm Window and restart the computer.

When the computer has restarted, find and double click the ZA_CLEAN.exe file to begin uninstalling ZoneAlarm. If you see a popup message from ZoneAlarm relating to allowing the ZA_CLEAN.EXE file, please choose Allow. When the uninstall process is complete, ZoneAlarm will ask to restart your pc. Please allow it to do so.

After the PC has restarted, please locate the ZoneAlarm installation file you downloaded and saved to your pc and begin the installation by double clicking the ZoneAlarm installation file.

We recommend you accept the "default recommendations" while the program takes you through the initial setup screens to ensure ZoneAlarm operates correctly.

When the installation is complete, ZoneAlarm will ask to restart your pc. Please allow it to do so.

After your pc has restarted, you may be prompted to add a new network. Please choose the "Internet Zone" as the "New Network" type.
    * PLEASE NOTE: If you are on a network with others computers and shared resources you will need to add those computers or the network to a "Trusted Zone" at a later stage. More information regarding networking is available in the ZoneAlarm Help file.

If you have a paid version of ZoneAlarm and are prompted to "Buy Now", "Trial ZoneAlarm or "Enter Your Key", please COPY and PASTE your registration key into the license key area and then select "apply".
Your license key would have been emailed to you at your time of purchase.
Please DO NOT attempt to type in the key. Due to the length and complexity of the alphanumeric key, mistakes can be made very easily.

The installation is complete. You can now close the ZoneAlarm window and continue using the computer."
