    Default Does the latest Zonealarm Antivirus still work?

    ZoneAlarm Anti-virus version:8.0.298.000
    TrueVector version:8.0.298.000
    Driver version:8.0.298.000
    Anti-virus engine version:6.0.2.678
    Anti-virus signature DAT file version:980829527

    When I installed the latest version and did a scan it worked fine. After a virus definition update the scanner seems to hang at c:\windows\_default.pif. By hang, I mean the only file shown is default.pif and the time does not change. Cpu usage drops to a few percent and the hard drive access slows down. After a few minutes the software states no infections found.

    Is the antivirus still protecting me? Why does it not scan correctly?

    Thanks.

    Operating System:Windows XP Pro
    Software Version:8.0
    Product Name:ZoneAlarm Antivirus

    Just tried the EICAR false virus and it was not detected by Zonealarm antivirus. Why?

    http://s118.photobucket.com/albums/o...h_1welcome.gif to the Zone Alarm User Forum..It sounds like your ZA configuration Database may be corrupted.

    ZA has incorparated a new way to Reset DataBase files so users don't need to go into Safe mode.

    To repair this problem, please follow the steps below. Please note that
    this will remove your program permission settings (so you may want to make
    note of them), but re-establishing them is a simple process.

    1.) Hold down the Ctrl and Shift keys together then

    2.) Right click on the ZA icon near your clock in the system tray lower right corner
    3.) Choose 'Reset' from the box that comes up
    4.) Choose Yes on the Reset Settings dialog box
    5.) When prompted, choose OK to restart your system
    6.) Follow the on screen configuration prompts after reboot

    Did the reset, ran scan and it does the same as before hanging at c:\windows\_default.pif and then after a few minutes of low cpu usage stating there were no infections.

    A scan of the file eicar.com states no infections.

    Do I have antivirus protection?

    Try to perform a full Antivirus/Antispyware scan but in SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING.

    1. Disable system restore;2. Set ZA antispyware to "Deep inspection scan" under the advanced options on ZA antivirus/antispyware tab (detection);
    3. Reboot in SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING;
    4. Manual run ZASS (ZA firewall will be OFF but Antivirus/Antispyware will be functional);
    5. Run a full ZA AV/AS scan;
    5. Reboot in Normal Mode
    6. Set ZA antispyware back to recommended settings ("Intelligent quick scan")7. Ensable System restore

    Just installed new program. It scanned fine and caught EICAR before and after the virus definitions were updated. Looks like nothing wrong on my end, just a ZoneAlarm software incident.

    I used ZASS primarily as a firewall disabling the AV but not the Spyware engine. I find their engine is outdated and does not have the required detection of rootkits and other complex intrustions via the browser. AVG and **bleep** have better AV engines and more. In XP I find the AVG or **bleep** will co-exist without issue and install updates usually without incident but not always as for updates.
