Default Uninstall Corrupted Version

When checking for updates I get "Program may be installed incorrectly. Can't determine currently installed version."
Also, Zone Alarm Client runs with every startup.
When I try to uninstall
Zone Alarm in order to get a fresh install,
I get "You do not have access to make the required system configuration modifications.
Please rerun from an administrators account."
I get the same message in Safe Mode in Adm. account.
How do I fix this?

Operating System:Windows XP Home Edition
Software Version:8.0
Product Name:ZoneAlarm Pro

gcooke,

Sorry to hear you have a corrupted zone alarm installation. Have you read and used fax's unstall instructions and cleaning procedure as detailed for another XP user here: http://forums.zonelabs.com/zonelabs/...ssage.id=56075 The poster there is using ZASS and you are using ZAPRO so the only change is for you to download a fresh copy of ZAPRO not ZASS.

Thanks for the info.
I've manually uninstalled ZA Pro and tried reinstalling per your post.
On reinstall I get the msg that I don't have access to make the required system configuration modications and to rerun from an administrators account.
I have been doing this in the std. XP boot and also Safe Mode with no luck.
In both cases all background programs were turned off using msconfg and antivirus was uninstalled.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

qcooke,

To uninstall zone alarm from an administrator's account you have tried both from an administrator's account in SAFE MODE and an administrator's account in SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING. Have you uninstalled both anti-virus and any anti-spyware programs you're running before reinstalling ZAPRO? Also before attempting to reinstall did you scan with SAS? and MBAM? and DrWebCureit? Sometimes failure to install is due to malware on the system. Cleaned out your temp files with a program like CCleaner? before reinstalling?

I've tried all suggestions and still am getting msg on a new install to rerun from an administrator's account.
I went back again and manually uninstalled ZA per http://forums.zonelabs.com/zonelabs/...ssage.id=56075.
I also did a registry search for anything with Zone Labs and Zonealarm and deleted them.
I did a file search for Zonealarm and deleted all files.
I still get the same msg on install.
I did find in the XP Security Center under Firewall that XP is reporting ZoneAlarm is currently on after the manual removal, reg edit, file deletion, and reboot.
Help!!

I fixed the problem with Windows Security Center showing ZA Pro was running when not installed by following instructions in this url: http://www.pchell.com/support/multip...y_center.shtml
.
However, I still have the problem
when installing ZA Pro with it wanting me to rerun
to an administrator's account which I've been doing.

qcooke,
Sorry to hear that you are still dealing with a corrupt installation of ZA Pro.
Another resource you can try is LIVE CHAT for paid zone alarm subscribers

Finley, thanks for the support.
After a while, I came to the conclusion my problem was possibly a Windows problem.
I kept dropping back and reinstalling image backups of my C drive (contains primarily Windows OS) until I found one that worked properly.
After getting mail, Windows updates, etc
all up to date, everything is back to normal.
I'd still like to know what the problem was.
Live Chat, which I had tried, is for Customer Support per their response.
Email has to be used for Technical support and they are slow.
It has been 3 days since I sent a request for help and the only response was an acknowledgement that it was received.

Quinton,
You're welcome.
I'm just a user trying to help another user.
I had a corrupt install myself on ZASS 8.0.298.000 and used an image backup to get me back working properly.
I use acronis and swear by it.
It's never let me down and saved my bleep on more than one occassion.
This was on a Windows XP Pro SP3 - can't definitively say what caused the corruption.
I'm now running ZASS 8.0.298.035.
My personal experience with tech tickets and response has been that they have always responded - the time factor for their response back to me has varied, assuming their load and the severity or lack of severity of my problem.
Also, there was a notice posted on one of their web pages that they have been impacted by the flooding recently in midwest of USA.
As long as you got a confirmation for submitting your tech ticket and have checked that your email provider has not junked or treated the tech support reply as spam - you should be in their queue for an answer.

Findley,
As info, I use BootIt NG for image backups.
This program was recommended by Fred Langa in Windows Secrets to which I subscribe and recommend.
BootIt NG boots before Windows boots and thus works outside of
Windows
making image backup potentially more reliable since no Windows files are currently
in use.
BootIt NG also permits booting to user selected operating systems and provides disk management.
A negative is that the program is not as user friendly as some.
