Default PC won't Shut Down after new update ZA IT Suite 8

    ZoneAlarm Security Suite version:8.0.298.035

Once I updated I found that my PC will not shut down very often. I literally have to unplug the power cord.

This is only a guess but I am hoping this is common and a simple tweak will do the trick. Anyone else having this problem?

Something I just this second discovered, I opened Add/Remove, to verify which version I am using, and I am informed that the last time the program was used was on 3/02/2007 and I do not see this version listed. Yet on my desktop of course the icon exists and when I click Restore ZA the window pops up with the new version# and that my subscription expires in 251 days.

I'd like first to solve the not shutting down problem and then the version in Add/Remove later.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

    Operating System:Windows XP Home Edition
    Software Version:8.0
    Product Name:ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite

Hi!there can be many many many different reasons for your PC not shutting down from corruption of OS orregistryto malwre or conflciting software.***First note that ZA does not play nice with many other security tools. They may block its correct functioning including updates. For example, spyware doctor, spysweeper, trojan hunter, win patrol, PCtools Threat Fire, Mcafee, Norton, Symantec, Adaware, SpybotS&D, WinPatrol, AVG, NOD, Kaspersky, Rising, PC Doctorand manyothers. If you want to troubleshoot issues with ZA please remove these tools (not enough to disable) and install back (if you really need) only after you see your ZA is working as it should. ****First lets try to isolate the problem and see if it is really ZA. Boot your system only with ZA and standard OS/Services. This way:1.) Click Start -> Run
2.) Type MSConfig in the run box and click OK
3.) Once in MSConfig, click the Startup Tab
4.) Remove the checks from everything except ZLClient
    5.) Click the Services Tab
6.) Place a check in "Hide All Microsoft Services"
7.) Now remove checks from everything other than TrueVector Internet
    Monitor, and click OK.
8.) Restart your computerHow does it work? Does it shudown correctly?
NOTE: You can place your computer back into a normal startup process by
going back into msconfig and choosing the Normal Startup option on the
    General tab.

    First off thanks fax,

I did as you suggested, step by step, by the book, and after waiting nearly 5 minutes, I had to unplug the power cord.

Once I restarted I followed the System Configuration suggestion and clicked on Start as Normal.

Anything else? I'd be happy to go to any length to get this figured out.

Sorry I must have missed that I needed to repeat.

OK now this morning I have repeated 5x and still it will not complete shutting down. I do wait until the heads park (I assume this is still important-it used to be) before plugging the power cord back in. Each time the Windows Config pops up & informs me, and I find that each time there is only one other tool which is re-checked (& I promise you I deselect this each time) and that is the ezSP_Px too.

Now I should mention that I have a lot on this HDD, as I am a photographer and I should probably buy a second external HDD and keep all of my working image files on those, but it is **bleep**ed convenient to just be able to go straight to them and begin my workflow each day. It is a matter of adding another step (and the time it takes) to get restarted. This I mention not only as a matter of convenience to me, but also because I simply cannot lose any of the work I have done on these, as I have years of files which I then print and upload. So a System Restore would threaten that work would it not?

Anyway I will get back to my email alerts sometime later this afternoon, unless I happen to be lucky enough to have an answer back from you this morning. Much appreciate your guidance thus far fax.

Hi!A. Check this registry entry, click Start > Run. Then type in: regedit

Click OK. Then follow the steps below.

01.) On the left, click the + next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
02.) Click the + next to SYSTEM
03.) Click the + next to CurrentControlSet
04.) Left click on the folder 'Control', to highlight it

On the right, there should be an entry listed that is labeled 'WaitToKillServiceTimeout'. What is its value set to? This will appear in the second column and it should be a number. Set it to 20000 (twenty thousand)

Is it 20000? No? try a couple reboots with the new value. If not, try this:B. Shutdown ZA beforeRight click on ZA icon near the clock --> Shutdown ZANow shutdown the machine. Does it shutdown correctly?Cheers,Fax

The setting you referred me to was already at the designated 20000 setting. Thanks for that.

So I moved to shutting down ZA, temporarily and both consecutive times I used the Start> Shut Down and it worked. Of course I have just restored ZA.

Thanks fax and now where do we go?

    Hi!OK, two possible solutions....

    A. Reset the ZA settings.
1.) Hold down the Ctrl and Shift keys together
2.) Right click on the ZA icon near your clock
3.) Choose 'Reset' from the box that comes up
4.) Choose Yes on the Reset Settings dialog box
5.) When prompted, choose OK to restart your system
6.) Follow the on screen configuration prompts after reboot

Do NOT restore any previous backup of the ZA settings. Does it shutdown correctly now? If not, go tothe next step (remove completely ZA inlcuding eventual left overs)

    B. Remove ZA manually and reinstall
First remove ZASS with the ZA removal tool (download on desktop and run as administrator):
    http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/fr...load/clean.exe

Double check that all ZA related files/folders are gone:
    1.) Restart your computer
2.) When you see the screen go black and it starts booting back up keep
tapping the "F8" key (at the top of your keyboard)
3.) This should bring up a menu. Choose Safe Mode off the menu by
using the arrow keys on the keyboard to highlight Safe Mode and press
    Enter
4.) If you get a message asking to go to Safe Mode, choose Yes. If you
get a help and support window, close this.
5.) Double Click the Program Files Folder
6.) Right Click the Zone Labs Folder, click Delete, and choose Yes

NOTE: If you cannot delete the entire folder, please open the Zone Labs ->
ZoneAlarm folder and delete out as many of the files listed here as
    possible.

    7.) Close this window
    8.) Click Start, My Computer
    9.) Double Click the C:
10.) Double Click the Windows Folder (It may also be WinNT)
11.) Right Click the Internet Logs Folder, click Delete, and choose Yes
12.) Double Click the System32 Folder
13.) Right Click the Zone Labs Folder, click Delete, and choose Yes

NOTE: If you cannot delete the entire folder, please open the Zone Labs
folder and delete out as many of the files listed here as possible.

14.) Clear your Temp Directory per the instructions below.
    - Go to Start -> Run
    - Type %temp% and click OK
    - Select all of these files and delete them
15.) Clear the Prefetch folder per the instructions below.
    - Go to Start -> Run
    - Type Prefetch and click OK
    - Select all of these files and delete them

    16.) Empty your recycle bin.
    17.) Restart the computer.

18.) ZA does not play nice with many other security tools. They may block its correct functioning including updates. For example, spyware doctor, spysweeper, trojan hunter, win patrol, PCtools Threat Fire, Mcafee, Norton, Symantec, Adaware, SpybotS&D, WinPatrol, AVG, Avast free, NOD, Kaspersky, Comodo, Rising, PC Doctor, MS Security essential, Avira and many others. If you want to troubleshoot issues with ZA please remove these tools (not enough to disable) and install back (if you really need) only after you see your ZA is working as it should.

19.) Double check you have really removed all other security tools by running this utility
    http://www.appremover.com/

20.) Check the system for malware. Check with MBAM and SuperAntispyware. See links here:
    Malware Clean-up Guidance

21). Clean your system and registry with ccleaner.com
    http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/slim

22). Re-download the latest ZASS installer
    www.zonealarm.com/zasuitedownload

23). Install with default settings do NOT alter them. After re-boot go to ZA antivirus/antispyware and 'Update Now' and do not restore any previous ZA settings.

    Cheers,
    Fax

fax you Guru, you have done it!!! Voila!!! Mui Bueno!!!

Apparently some form of custom settings must have corrupted the shut down sequence. Thanks for hanging in there with me. BTW the only other piece of defense I have is a December 08 install of Malwarebytes. I don't think this is a problem but if I am wrong I will get rid of it.

Then I want to get rid of that pesky pop up by Windows Defender, but that's a PC problem.

Much Appreciate the help and now I can recommend ZA to a friend who is thinking of getting rid of McAfee. We were talking about this the other day but he wanted to wait and see.
