    Default Ghost ZoneAlarm will not allow an update

    After attempting to update with zasuitesetup_80-400-020_en.exe, I get the error message: "Installer cannot shutdown your current version of ZoneAlarm. To resolve this, please restart your computer and then restart your program."

    Restarting, three times now, just gets me the same error message. In addition, my current version of ZoneAlarm was wiped out by my first update effort but for errorlog.txt, INSTALL.LOG, and zlavscan.dll. Yet Windows Task Manager says ZoneAlarm is running. ZoneAlarm's icon is not in the systray, however, and a general search for ZoneAlarm files reveals only the three files mentioned. Ending the ghost ZoneAlarm from Task Manager then running zasuitesetup_80-400-020_en.exe gets me the same error message.

    So magic does exist. Does anyone have the right spell to cast? I want my ZoneAlarm back.

    http://s118.photobucket.com/albums/o...h_1welcome.gif to the Zone Alarm User Forum..This is just my 2 cents worth,If your having problem installing ZA Anti-Virus or ZA Security Suiteor ZA Extreme Security and have ever uninstalleda previous installation of Norton Systemworks or Norton AntiVirus, or Norton Security Suite 2008/2009 or Norton 360 or any McAfee Toolswhen you use ADD/Remove to Remove any of Symantec Norton utilities, especially their Norton Anti-Virus program, they still leave lots of traces behind after the "UNINSTALL"Fortunately SYMANTEC has a Fix for this problem on the Symantec web site called "NORTON REMOVAL TOOL" that does a better job of REMOVING ALL traces of Norton Symantec files..here is the Link to the Symantec Norton Removal Tool..http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...ent&amp;seg=hmHere is the Link to the McAfee Removal Tool..http://download.mcafee.com/products/...tches/MCPR.exe<H5>Affected Operating Systems: </H5><UL><LI>Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional <LI>Microsoft Windows XP Professional <LI>Microsoft Windows XP Home <LI>Microsoft Windows Vista </LI>[/list]

    NOTE: This tool is not compatible with Microsoft Windows 98 or ME.******** Important Notice ******** http://s118.photobucket.com/albums/o..._1readthis.gifIfyou have already installedAny Version of ZoneAlarm, there are several things you need to do, after you have removed all traces of Norton and Symantec with the (Norton Removal Tool) , before you install your New ZAFree 8.0.400.020, ZAPro, ZAAV orSecurity Suite, ZAX8.0.400.020 or ZoneAlarm Free 7.1.254.000 for Vista or 8.0.298.000 or 8.0.400.20 for Paid version of ZA for Vista Sp1 or SP2.************************************************** ************1.) I recommend downloading a FREETrash cleaner called ccleaner.exe from www.ccleaner.com and install it and run it with the default setting
    to clean out all junk from your Cashe, Temp Files and Recycle bin, even a good Registry cleaner.. Here is an alternate Site for a Slim version of ccleaner without the Yahoo Tool-bar.. http://www.majorgeeks.com/CCleaner_S...bar_d4191.html******** Important Notice ******** http://s118.photobucket.com/albums/o..._1readthis.gif2.) Now go into ZA Menu by double clicking on the ZA Tray icon and click on Overview, click on Preferences
    and Uncheck "Load ZA**** on Startup", then Reboot your computer.. this will remove TrueVector,vsmon.exe and other ZA drivers from memory, so that they will not conflict with the install of the New ZAFree, ZAPro, ZAAV orSecurity Suite, and also the major reason for TrueVector Errors on new installs..The other major cause of Install failure and True Vector errors is Conflict with 3rd party Security programs running during ZA install, like Webroot Spysweeper, Spyware Doctor, Bit Defender Conflicts because it has many of the features of ZASS..Spyware Doctor's Process Guard does not play nice with ZA..3.) As a General Rule to avoid Conflict you should Only run one Firewall and one Anti-Virus on the same computer..
    You can run Multiple Anti-Spyware programs, as long as the Anti-Spyware does not include some firewall or Anti-Virus Function to Conflict with ZA..as far as the WindowsXP firewall, ZA by default on install will turn OFF the Windows one way Firewall..Don't worry if Windows Security Center pops up a warning that it does not recognize ZA Firewall..
    There is a fix for that Cosmetic flaw in windows..4.)
    Click on Program Control, this will display a new page, at the TOP of that page Click the "Program" tab
    That will open a new page.. on the left is the names of the files and programs being controlled..Look down the list for.. (the Program that your having a problem with)
    in the "Trusted Level"
    Column of ( Your Program ) LEFT Click and Click on SUPER, this will place 3 Green Bars in that Column
    The next Column is "ACCESS" Left Click in that Column and change Red X's to Green Check marks for "Trusted" and "Internet" access
    Change all other Marks on that Line to "?" Question Marks for Ask..Now you should not have anymore problem with (Your Program)Make sure all of the following Programs have Trusted and Internet access (Green Check Marks):a.) All Microsoft wand Windows Programs have Green Check marks for Trusted and Internet Access..
    b.) Generic Host Process for win32 Services (svchost.exe) Also Grant this Trusted Server Rights
    c.) IE Crash Detection
    d.) Internet Explorer or FireFox
    e.) Malicious Software Removal Tool
    f.) True Vector Service (If it is listed)
    g.) Zone Alarm Client
    h.) Zone Alarm Updating Client
    i.) Your Email Client needs Trusted, Internet and Send Mail all need Green check Marks..

    I am having a very similar problem. I attempted to install ZoneAlarm Security Suite (zaSuiteSetup_80_400_020_en.exe) on Windows XP Pro version: 5.1.2600 and I've shut down my PC numerous times and still get the same message that TrueVector Service has encountered a problem and needs to close. Got the dialog box to report the problem and sent the error report to MS three times for every time I attempted to install/upgrade ZA. I have upgraded ZA for years without any problems. The next message was, 'The installer cannot shutdown your current version of ZA. To resolve this, please restart your computer and restart your upgrade&quot;. No luck trying this multiple times. The next message read, 'The system needs to be restarted to complete the installation...&quot;

    I went into the Microsoft Management Console and verified True Vector was not started or anything else that may be causing issues. I stopped ZA Force Field. Tried the install again without any luck. Shut down tried again. No luck. After finding this thread I remembered I used to use a Norton AV years ago and even though I did not have any problems installing countless versions of ZA over the last few years, I decided to download the Norton Removal Tool and after running that and restarting, I got the same errors. There is nothing to uninstall anymore. I still have the ZA folder (C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm). It looks like the folder only contains a few files left behind for the upgrade. There is a file named zauninst.exe that I tried to use and it gives me the message, 'The uninstaller cannot locate resources needed to uninstall.&quot;

    I've had CCleaner for years and I've upgraded every time there's a new version, like there was today. I ran the Windows and application cleaner as well as the registry cleaner. This did not help with my issue with upgrading ZA. I cannot do step 2 because ZA was, for the most part, uninstalled. I made sure vsmon.eve was not running before trying to do any further ZA installs. Still no luck. I will try and uninstall ZAFF and ZA Spy Blocker tonight if I don't receive any other suggestions.

    As for step 3, I only run one firewall and one AV product and they are both part of ZA Internet Security Suite with ZA Force Field (ZAFF).
    Add/Remove Programs only shows ZoneAlarm ForceField and ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker in stalled. My next step will be to uninstall them as well. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Dean

    GeorgeV,

    Success !!! I got my windows version I gave you in my previous post from the error log (txt file) that was created by ZA, which said, Installing ZoneAlarm Security Suite on Windows version: 5.1.2600 . After getting your reply, I clicked on Start and Run and typed in winver.exe , pressed enter and it shows I am running version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.090206-1234 : Service Pack 3). I'm good about getting software updates just about daily, except for Windows updates, which I check on my own about every week and download and install as soon as they are available. I also have it setup to notify when windows updates are available.

    I restarted the windows firewall as suggested. I ran Windows update, downloaded update to .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 for the .NET Framework Assistant 1.0 x86 (KB963707), which was the only update available for my system and it was just released today. Downloaded cpes_clean.exe using the link you provided and that did the trick. About to restart my computer now since that is what the ZA configuration wizard is instructing me to do.

    Thanks again for all your help!!

    Dean
