    Default Windows blocking Zonealarm. Virus/trojan????

    Hello.

I am having problems with my Zonealarm Pro Firewall. I originally suspected it may be a virus or trojan, but I have been unable to find any malware on the computer.
    The problem is the following:

Zonealarm does not start up with my computer anymore. (At least the gui does not - the truevector etc. is still running and protecting my computer). When I then try to launch Zonealarm, Windows reports that zlclient.exe is not allowed to run.

    I did the following:

    1) Scan with Antivir, Panda (online), Adaware, Trend Micro (online), BitDefender (online), Ewido, Trojan Hunter. They didn't find anything except tracing cookies.

    2) I followed the description on http://nh2.nohold.net/noHoldCust25/P...tallNonNT.html
    to uninstall Zonealarm.

    3) I reinstalled Zonealarm.

    4) It is still not allowed to run and I now have the added problem of not being able to access the internet or indeed use any programs with internet access, since Zonealarm is blocking them all, but is not giving me any opportunity to tell it to allow the programs access (this mail is being sent from my work).

My computer is an AMD XP 3200+ with 512 MB RAM.
I am running Windows 2000 (danish version, even though I am in US right now).

Do anyone of you have any previous experience with anything like this? Could it be a virus/trojan? Any help would be most appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Birgitte

    Product Name:ZoneAlarm Pro
    Software Version:6.5

It could be a virus but I doubt it. More likely your application is corrupt. Do a 'clean' uninstall of your current Zone Alarm firewall first. Go into the start menu locate the zonelabs entry and right click on the uninstaller and select properties. Now in the target box you must add a space and then /clean to the end so that it looks something like this "C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zauninst.exe" /clean click apply and then OK. Next open ZA and turn off the load on boot option, then reboot and then run the uninstaller. This should get rid of all of ZoneAlarm. Now go to your windows temp folder and delete everything. Find the folder named Internet logs and delete it then empty your recycle bin. Now install a fresh copy of Zone Alarm Pro. That should fix it.

    Hi!

I have almost identical problem with the ZoneAlarm (free edition)
    - The TrueVector runs and it is impossible to stop it (as the administrator, of course).
    - The ZoneAlarm icon doesn't appear in the systray.
    - When I try to start the ZoneAlarm, Windows refuse to launch it (with the error message something like "access denied").

    - I scanned the computer with AVG antivirus (free edition), which didn't find anything.
    - I followed the instructions on http://www.out__stfirewall.com/forum...ead.php?t=7172 (first attempt) (replace two underscores by "po") and http://nh2.nohold.net/noHoldCust25/P...tallNonNT.html (second attempt) to cleanly uninstall the ZA.
    - I reinstalled the ZoneAlarm
    - After reboot, I had the same problem again.

However, I managed then to stop the TrueVector in the Safe Mode (My Computer -> Manage -> Services and applications -> Services -> (select TrueVector... ) -> Properties -> change the Startup Type to "Manual".
    - After reboot in normal mode (but as administrator) I managed to start the ZoneAlarm - the icon appeared in the systray, I was able to open the Control Center and configure the ZA! The red and green bar were showing the Internet traffic, everything seemed to work.
    - After the next reboot, I had the initial problem again. :-(

If it help and you manage tp fix the problem, please explain it!

    Regards,
    ludvik

I again tried uninstalling and reinstalling a freshly downloaded version of Zonealarm, but the result was the same so I doubt there was anything wrong with my first copy. However, after reading in the forum that several other people had problems with version 6.5, I tried installing version 6.1.744.001 (http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/fre...seHistory.html)

Everything now works again! I am waiting for a new version to come out before I install a newer version of Zonealarm!

    Hi ludvik.

I got my Zonealarm to work. Maybe the same will work for you. Apparently lots of people are having trouble with version 6.5. I tried installing version 6.1.744.001 (http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/fre...seHistory.html). Remember to do a clean uninstall first. See http://www.nohold.net/noHoldCust25/P...n_install.html for a description on how to do this.

I hope you get your firewall to work also!

Which version did you manage to work: 6.1 or 6.5?
