    The ad for System Mechanic says it will "clean-up, compact, and defragment your registry." If so, do I need to purchase Registry Mechanic.

    Operating System:Windows XP Home Edition
    Product Name:ZoneAlarm Antivirus
    Software Version:6.5

    I wouldnt bother , i have registry patrol but to be honest it doesnt do any better of a job than a freeware reg cleaner , they all have differant types of scanner and all scan for differant things , run one cleaner and get it to clean and repair your reg then run another straight after and it will find differant problems , save you money and stick with what you have Plus i have a sneaky feeling that the reg scanner in sys mech is probably Reg Mechanic anyway!If you have ZA and have recieved the e mail to get System Mech cheap id go for it , i just got it for
    10 , bargain , although it does have a habit of configuring things youd ratehr it left alone but you'll soon get used to it and its settings :8}

    Personally, I would not advise using any registry cleaner, unless you are confident that you can check and decide about each 'wrong' registry entry it flags. Having tested quite a few to see how they work, most of them find 'errors' at keys that, if you allowed the cleaner to remove them, would break one or other app. In any case, never blindly click the 'fix all' button.As for defragmenting and compacting the registry, the effect on performance is negligible (the only possible exception might be if you install/uninstall many apps very frequently).

    I have to dissagree , ive used reg optimisers in all shapes and sizes for years and never ever had a problem , if your worried just back up your reg first its easy to do , most optimisers give you this option anyway.They can be a very usefull tool if you get a good one
