    Hi Fax
Thanks Fax for providing the inspiration and I hope this proves of use to others, thanks also to the previous poster.
    I have some answers.
    And from what I can determine it is nothing to do with ZA :8}
Toggling Privacy had no real impact
Toggling MS Auto Update most certainly did!Mine is
set to "Download updates for me,
but let me choose when to install them"Using Task Manager Performance I got identical chart profiles with Update on.
    I get,
a 30 second 100% cpu followed by a 5 second low followed by 2 minutes of 100%.With THIS setting what seems to happen EVERY time I log on is:UpDate.exe connects to MS, identifies the sender (WGAN ???) and interogates MS for updates.
I can now understand why Uncle Bill recommends you set MS Updates to Automatic because this provides a means of regulating this connection time.
Well well. Now I must start digging into why during the pc verification process of MS Updates on Custom Updates it takes absolutely ages to verify my pc
    - I can go and brew a cup of tea and read the newspaper in the time it takes
Curiosity is, I have always had this setting but why have I only just noticed the heavy burden in the last few weeks???

    Edited:And other things in hindsight
are, I run with an Athlon 1900+ a pci card with an 8Mbps ADSL connection.
If it takes mine 2.5 minutes for the Update process to complete, what therefore must it take for a dial up at 56kbps?
And why oh why does it consume 100% of my cpu and thus prevent use of the pc??

The usual mistery of Windows OS... I have Update on Auto and don't have such a behaviour..Well, at least you know something more now...Out of curiosity, do you have delay problems when accessing http://update.microsoft.com or it is nice and smooth?Cheers,Fax

By the way, I have missed your message about the fact that youdo not have "automatic updates" (wuauclt.exe) under program list (not in component but program), please add it manually.May be this is the problem?Product name Microsoft
    Windows
    Operating System
    File name C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe
It should be set to Super trusted and green checks on trusted and internet access (no server access needed)This file is the responsible for the windows automatic updates at startup.Fax

    Hi Fax
Yes, as I said, I choose Custom when going on to Update
    manually.
It takes absolutely ages to verify my pc.
I haven't timed it but it is in the order of 5 minutes.
And lately there have been one or two instances of it not going through the process of
    download and install smoothly.
Incidently, I've just mailed my son who was looking into this issue as well with a mate of his.
It was nice to beat him to it for once
Thanks again - I'm off to pursue the forums for Updates now.

    Hi Fax
    I find there are 2 files wuauclt.exe and wuauclt1.exe.
    Which should I use?

You have to use "wuauclt.exe"...Whenever you call "Bill" for updates "wuauclt.exe" is called upon. Strange that you do not have it under program list...Fax

Sorry to bother you again but please also check if:"Background Intelligent Transfer" and "Automatic Update"Service are 'started' and set to 'automatic'To list services in the OS:Start -> runtype services.mscokMany problems related to windows update are linked to a disabled "Background Intelligent Transfer" serviceFax

    Hi Fax
I must have been looking in Programs for something listed under Windows or MS Updates.
I found it under plain old Automatic Updates and it has 3 bars, 2 green checks and 3 red crosses.
I can also confirm that Background Intelligent Transfer Service and Automatic Updates are both set to Started and Automatic.
I have now set my Updates to auto and hope to manage the unavailability time accordingly.
Did you see my edited mail about those with a dial up at 56kbps and why does it consume 100% of my 1 gig ram for a download?
