Default Can't completely boot Me, validation failed for VSINIT.EXE

I don't really know the Zonealarm version, but it was the last one which would work with Windows Me.
I just loaded a new verison of People PC and Windows Me
    will not boot completely now.
I get as far as the login screen which now does not display any names and a popup comes over it telling me that the validation for VSINIT.exe failed.
I can "OK" thru that and cancel the login in screen, then the windows music plays and I'm left with a BSOD.
When I try to boot in Safe mode, I get as far as a grey screen with "Safe Mode" in each corner.
I tries scanreg /restore with the Me Emergency disk and the .cab files available are several years old.
    Suggestions please!!!!

    Operating System:Windows ME
    Software Version:6.1
    Product Name:ZoneAlarm (Free)

Is it possible to get far enough into safe mode and uninstall the ZA?

Maybe can be done Standard Installer Command-Line Options.

I not well versed in your OS or in DOS.

Is there a "last known good configuration" in the safe mode menu?

You got a live linux CD OS handy? You can then see the files in the windows on the drive and just delete the folders and do a reboot? Something like Knoppix will do the job.
