    Default ZoneAlarm Not Opening

    Hi,
I just installed ZoneAlarm Pro version 6.5.737, however, I am unable to open the program.
It opens up for less than a second, but then closes straight down. Sometimes it doesn't open at all.

    Any help would be appreciated,
    Cheers.

    Operating System:Windows XP Home Edition
    Software Version:6.5
    Product Name:ZoneAlarm Pro

    Dear slapnutskits:

Why are you using an outdated ZAPRO version from 2006? Also, when this happens, doesn vsmon.exe and zlclient.exe processes show up in the list of the Windows Task Manager?
Please describe in more detail what happens when you attempt to open the program. Does it display an error dialog box? Is the program configured to start up during bootup?

I've tried the one from 2006 and I've tried the latest release, but to no avail. I currently have the latest release.

It is configured to open when the PC boots, but it doesn't. When I try to open the program through Start > All Programs, it flashes on the screen for less than a second, then closes straight away.

zlclient.exe does appear in the Task Manager processes, but the other one you mentioned doesn't appear to show up.

Sorry I can't be more detailed, I don't really know what else to point out.

    Dear slapnuskits:

If you are missing vsmon.exe, ZAPRO is not protecting your PC. Use ZAPRO's uninstaller off the Start menu to uninstall the program(don't use Add or Remove Programs).

Check and delete any remaining files/folders found in these locations and the folder itself:

C:\Program Files\Zone Labs(default install location, may be in custom install folder if you chose that during installation)

    C:\WINDOWS\Internet Logs

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\Zone Labs

In the Registry, delete these bolded entries:

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Zone Labs-delete this subkey

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run-find the entry in the right pane called, ZoneAlarm Client, and delete it.

If you don't find all of these, that's a good thing. It means they were removed already. Now reboot and try to reinstall ZAPRO.

    Please post your results.

    Dear slapnutskits:

Well, you can try manually uninstalling ZAPRO which is a more elaborate procedure.

    Manual Uninstall of ZAPRO

First the disclaimer. This list is for manually uninstalling ZAPRO only, on a Windows XP operating system. It is a last resort, short of reformatting and reinstalling your operating system. Editing the Registry directly can cause catastrophic problems to your operating system, program files, and data. Changes are usually made in real time. I recommend that you use a registry editor that has an Undo feature, something that regedit does not have. I have not tested this method as I never had a severe enough problem with ZAPRO to warrant it. Therefore, proceed at your own risk.

Make sure you are logged on either as the Administrator or an account that is a member of the Administrator's group. Also, I would do these actions in Safe Mode due to the problems you have had.

    1.DELETE THESE FOLDERS

C:\Program Files\Zone Labs(this folder will be elsewhere if you chose a custom location to install this program)
    C:\WINDOWS\Internet Logs
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZoneLabs

    2.DELETE THESE FILES

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\libeay32_0.9.6I.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\vsconfig.xml
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\vsdata.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\vsdatant.sys
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\vsinit.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\vsmonapi.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\vspubapi.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\vsregexp.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\vsutil.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\vswmi.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\vsxml.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\zlcomm.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\zlcommdb.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\z l l i c t b l.dat

If 1 and 2 were deleted to the Recycle Bin, empty that now.

    3.DELETE THESE REGISTRY SUBKEYS

    HKCR\ZAMailSafe

    HKCU\Software\Zone Labs

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Management\ARPCache\ZoneAlarm Pro
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uni nstall\ZoneAlarm Pro
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Zone Labs
    HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Eventlog\System \vsdatant
    HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\vsdatant
    HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\vsmon
    HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services\Eventlog\System \vsdatant
    HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services\vsdatant
    HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services\vsmon
    HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog\Sy stem\vsdatant
    HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\vsdatant
    HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\vsmon

    HKU\.DEFAULT\Software\Zone Labs
HKU\S-x-x-xx\Software\Zone Labs(x's represent numbers, mine may be different from yours)
    HKU\S-x-x-xx-xxxxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxxx-xxxx\Software\Zone Labs

    4.DELETE THESE REGISTRY VALUE NAMES

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Sha redDLLs-C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\vsdatant.sys
    -C:\WINDOWS\system32\vsdata.dll
    -C:\WINDOWS\system32\vsdatant.sys
    -C:\WINDOWS\system32\vsinit.dll
    -C:\WINDOWS\system32\vsmonapi.dll
    -C:\WINDOWS\system32\vspubapi.dll
    -C:\WINDOWS\system32\vsutil.dll
    -C:\WINDOWS\system32\vswmi.dll
    -C:\WINDOWS\system32\vsxml.dll
    -C:\WINDOWS\system32\zlcomm.dll
    -C:\WINDOWS\system32\zlcommdb.dll
    -C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZoneLabs\camupd.dll
    -C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZoneLabs\cerbprovider.pvx
    -C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZoneLabs\scheduler.dll
    -C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZoneLabs\ssleay32.dll
    -C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZoneLabs\vsavpro.dll
    -C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZoneLabs\vsdb.dll
    -C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZoneLabs\vsmon.exe
    -C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZoneLabs\vsmondll.dll
    -C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZoneLabs\vsruledb.dll

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run-ZoneAlarm Client

Once you do all this, go into Add or Remove Programs and if ZoneAlarm Pro is still listed, click to Remove it. It will bring up a dialog box stating program has been removed and prompts if you want to remove the entry. As you go through these, you may find that some of these are not on your system. Just continue. I doubt that this list is everything but I would say most of it.

Once done, reboot, and reinstall the MOST CURRENT version (7.0.462.000).

Good luck and please post your results.

I tried this but it still isn't working.

I just noticed that when I install the program I get the following messages near the end.

"Unable to connect to TrueVector service - Cannot configure access rules"

    "Error processing config file!"

The program still installs, but I still can't open the program.

I have another Firewall installed - **bleep** - I started to think that it may be interfering with ZAPRO, but I closed the program down and it still didn't make a difference.

    Dear slapnutskits:

You can't have 2 software firewalls or antivirus programs operating concurrently. Unpredictable events can occur. Even if they are inactive, problems can still occur. Make a choice of which firewall you want and uninstall the other.

    Hope this helps.

I uninstalled **bleep** and reinstalled ZAPRO but it still doesn't work.

Do I have to also turn off Windows Firewall?
