Default Why does on-access scan require 75% of cpu cycles?

It is very nearly the only process running at times.

I've had to disable it just to use my computer at all, and I really don't want to do that.

    Operating System:Windows XP Pro
    Software Version:
    Product Name:ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite

Never mind. Figured it out. It was watching Adobe updater patch Photoshop. Though why it has to watch that continuously escapes me.
