Default ZA recently installed--is not detecting intrusion attemps

I just installed ZA free version (about midnight ET) late Monday, January 29, 2008.
It says, "The firewall has blocked 0 (inbound) access attempts.15 program(s) secured for Internet access.End quote.
The Windows XP built-in firewall is turned off.The Windows XP security center says that there is a working firewall.
The ISP is Verizon budget DSL service.I am running with the Administrator privilege switched off for security reasons. (a so-called Limited User Account) or unprivileged account.
Windows XP Service Pack 2 with all security patches.AVG anti-virus version 7.5 (free edition)Google desktop search
Hypothesis 1 is that the ISP is running its own firewall which catches intrusion attempts before they get to my computer.
Mozilla Firefox browser version 2.0.0.11 (the latest version)This is a home installation, and I correct to the Intenet directly through the phone line and DSL--i.e., no LAN.
Hypothesis 2 is that ZoneAlarm won't "play nice" with the unprivileged Limited User Account.
Informally, it is my impression that the computer is fairly secure. The common signs of infection (strange popup's, etc.) do not appear.
There was a dreadful crash about a year ago, and I had to re-install the OS.
    Feedback?

    Hi!
The key questions you should be addressing in your e-mail are:

    - First time you use ZA? Or first time you are with Verizon?
    - Did ever ZA blocked intrusion before?
    - Are you connecting to DSL via a router or modem doing NAT?
    - Have you check at www.grc.com (shieldUP test) if you are stealth? And which IP is scanned?
    - Is the IP scanned at grc the same of your system?

Overall, either ZA installation is corrupted or simply your router/modem is blocking unsolicited calls from the internet.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,

One of the tests suggested over at grc.com checks whether the ISP provider blocks ports. In my case Verizon.
With no router in place, and ZA running, I ran the test on FIOS, recently, and DSL long ago, and there was no evidence of blocking by Verizon whatsoever, so it's all in the modems, routers, and the computer. ZA blocked lots of traffic then.

With a router or NAT DSL modem in place, there's really not much left for ZA to block, all the fly-by traffic is stopped, and what is left ZA
    munches up
    admirably well.

Upon running ShieldsUP, all of the ports showed green, indicating stealth mode. I guess that is the situation right there; ZoneAlarm is not detecting any intrusion attempts, because they are either being blocked before they get to my computer, or are not being generated at all.

For months and months and months, I had been getting a steady stream of intrusion attempts. Then somebody or other made them stop. I was TERRIFIED, INFURIATED. Really nice of somebody to make this drastic change without notifying the users. :-(

    Hi!

yes, than your router or modem is blocking the unsolicited calls from the internet.
Just compare the IP scanned by ShieldUp and the machine IP, if they different then something else than ZA is blocking the calls.
