Default Only 5 intrusions blocked...Last time i had over thousands

Yeah - I reinstalled win xp pro - And installed zone alarm free...Left my pc on the entire night and i only get 5 intrusion attempts...With my cable modem directly plugged in and no router.

Does this seem normal? Did i configure something wrong?

Because the last time i used ZA on my other installation...it was blocking TONS of intrusions and background noise.

I SENSE something is wrong here

There could be multiple reasons why this is occuring.

There is a possibility that last time you potentially could have had some malware/troyan that called out, but ZA firewall recognized it and inhibited the coming in.

Or you could have been assigned a new IP address lately by the internet provider (my cable company assigns a new one every month), thereby the newer IP address is not being affected as much as the old one.

I really think you should just spend the 30-40 bucks on a router or external firewall to rid yourself of the noise/attacks, and allow your software firewall to handle the local network. It gives an added piece of mind.

    Cheers,

What's the best security router i can purchase?

Also i am not good at port forwarding.

I have like $120 to spend on a router - Recommend me the best one

ZyXEL P1 external firewall: (read the specifications on the page)
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...Tpk=zyxel%2bp1
I've tested it and after you update the firmware (via the manufacter's site), it works like a gem!
Plug-and-play but only can plug into one computer (small like a PDA device too).
When it first came out ~2 years ago it was $250.00 new
However, if you must have a firewall Router/Switch, then get this:
    NETGEAR FVS114http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833122081
I'm a fan of CheckPoint firewalls (but they generally cost $$$$$$)
For home users, I am fond of ZyXEL and SONICWALL and also NETGEAR.
If you're interested in a router with wireless, then I do know Zonealarm offers their own
    http://www.zonealarm.com/store/conte...ess_router.jsp
I havnt read any reviews of it yet as it is only purchasable through their website.
