Default Norton Antivirus 2008 Advanced Firewall option shows AT RISK after KB951748 and ZA Free 7.0.483

Timeline:
[*]After Microsoft patch KB951748 was installed on 7/9/08, ZoneAlarm free 7.0.473 stopped internet traffic.[*]I stopped ZA and internet access resumed ok, but Norton Antivirus 2008 showed Advanced Firewall "At Risk" which is correct, since no 2-way firewall was active.[*]I then installed ZA Free 7.0.483 which resolves KB951748 and all was well with Internet access. BUT Norton Antivirus 2008 does NOT show ADVANCED FIREWALL as "Secured"... still shows "AT RISK".[/list]I know one other user with the same symptom.
Perhaps the new 7.0.483 is not telling NAV that it is a 2-way firewall?

Operating System:Windows XP Pro
Software Version:7.0
Product Name:ZoneAlarm (Free)

the short...
1. Shutdown ZA (right click the ZA icon near the clock),
2. Wait 2-3 minutes,
3. Re-open ZA (from all programs --> ZoneAlarm --> etc) and unless you have a more serious issue WSC should now recognise ZA.

As long as you know your ZA is working - really working - that's what more important.
On some rare occasions with an update - Windows not recognizing ZA firewall does occur - this is a small OS error/ glitch in recognition - only; your ZA firewall is working properly if you see "all systems active" in ZA and operations appear normal.
and the long...
As far as ZA is concerned, you could try the following to get Windows security center to recognize ZA, which it ought to
(preferably off line)
In ZA, make sure that in Firewall >
Main -
tab> Advanced> General settings> 'Disable Windows firewall' "is checked."
Then shut down ZA (right click on ZA
tray icon, click >
"Shutdown ZoneAlarm."
In Windows security center, switch on Windows firewall. Security center should show that Windows firewall is on (click chevron next to firewall to read the message).
Restart ZA from start, programs. Check in security center whether it recognizes that ZA has come on (ZA will have switched off the Windows firewall when you restart it - automatically).
If that does not work, but you are happy not to have security center alert you, in security center, on the left click change the way security center alerts me, then uncheck the box for firewall alert.
Additionally, if the above doesn't work, see in Norton av 2008 if there's a "worm guard/ protection" = which has similar "firewall-like protection" that you can 'turn-off' < this is one issue that some past users with Norton av's have had and was remedied by turning that option off. (ZA firewall already provides similar protection).
see this > http://forums.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/...d=79290#M79290 and the reply below it. This 'not recognizing ZA firewall in Windows security center' is not unique to this 7.0.483 > but
can occasionally occur after any ZA upgrade or MS update.
:8}NaiveMelody NYC 7-14-08 - Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana

Did as you suggested. When computer is restarted message is still there? Downloaded new version of Internet Security 7.0.483, no help. Cannot find anything of help on Norton site!

Please clarify > it is not the Windows Security Center/ (Norton Protection Center) of the OS - that is giving the 'warning';
but rather the Norton Av's software program that has a ~security pc monitor ~one that monitors 'firewall' protection > and this is giving you are 'yellow' warning of 'less security'= 'at risk.'
This is Windows Security Center > http://forums.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/...ssage.id=79409
As long as you know your ZA is working - really working - that's what more important.
On some rare occasions with an update - Windows or some other security monitor
not recognizing ZA firewall does occur - this is a small OS error/ glitch in recognition - only; your ZA firewall is working properly if you see "All Systems Active" (in green lettering)
in ZA and operations appear normal
.- You do know that Norton "does want you to use their firewall instead of some other brands." And if their security monitor of firewalls 'has some difficulties' in accepting and properly monitoring 'other brand firewalls - especially after it has updated/ upgraded - as the case is here - then it is Norton's culpability.- If Norton av has an option to 'shut off' the 'monitoring of firewall' - it may be a acceptable option or "to ignore" that alert.
Read the following - click these:> http://forums.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/...ssage.id=34143
> http://forums.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/...ssage.id=34147
> http://forums.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/...ssage.id=34349
Other thoughts: while you were un-installing or installing/ re-installing ZA - was Norton av still on? Was the monitor still on ? If the monitor was still on - it may have 'held on' to the presence of the old ZA and did not recognize the new version/ upgrade 'confusing' the monitor - giving you the Norton alert.Nevertheless, is ZA firewall running properly? That is the important issue.
:8}NaiveMelody NYC 7-18-08 - Truckin' - The Greatful Dead
