Default PC freezes when automatic update runs (sometimes)

I am running ZoneAlarm Security Suite version 7.0.483.000 with Windows XP Home Edition/Service Pack 3 and Internet Explorer 7. ZoneAlarm and Windows are up to date.
Sometimes my PC freezes when the ZoneAlarm automatic update begins to run. Not only can I not open or close web pages when the auto update runs, it also freezes the Task Manager. It just takes hold of everything and does let anything work and even when I disconnect from the web the auto update will still not release for a long time... like 5 minutes or more.
I have scanned my system for viruses and spyware using ZoneAlarm and I find no viruses and only the usual list of low risk tracking cookies ZoneAlarm always deletes.
This doesn't always happen but it happens just enough to make me angry enough to want to uninstall ZoneAlarm and go back to my old security suite. My old Norton Internet Security was a resources hog but sometimes when this ZoneAlarm automatic update runs it is many, many times worse than anything I have ever experienced with Norton. Why is ZoneAlarm auto update hogging so much resources that when it doesn't slow my web activity down to a crawl it freezes my PC altogether?

Here is one solution that helps other ZASS Users.. to the Zone Alarm User Forum..It sounds like your ZA Database may be corrupted

ZA has incorparated a new way to Reset DataBase files so users don't need to go into Safe mode.

To repair this problem, please follow the steps below. Please note that
this will remove your program permission settings (so you may want to make
note of them), but re-establishing them is a simple process.

1.) Hold down the Ctrl and Shift keys together then

2.) Right click on the ZA icon near your clock in the system tray lower right corner
3.) Choose 'Reset' from the box that comes up
4.) Choose Yes on the Reset Settings dialog box
5.) When prompted, choose OK to restart your system
6.) Follow the on screen configuration prompts after reboot

------------------------------------------------------------

B.) If your running any other Security Software, that may be conflicting with ZoneAlarm like Spyware Doctor..

It seems that Spyware Doctor's Process Guard does not play nice with ZA. There is a known issue that PC Tools is investigating where the Spyware Doctor causes excess CPU usage for vsmon.exe

C.) If the Above does not help then

you can Contact ZoneAlarm Tech Support Directly for Free at www.zonealarm.com/tsform (Preferably with MS IE7 Browser) Please provide them as Much Infomation and Detail of you problem and what Versions Of ZA and Windows and Computer you have..

Please post back with a Progress Report to this User Forum..

Thank you GeorgeV.
I followed the steps as you listed to repair a possible corrupted database. I hope that helps but like I said it doesn't freeze every time the auto update runs and so it may be several days or a week before I know if it solved the problem. My system froze this morning during an auto update but the time prior to that was one day last week. Usually happens at least 5 or 6 times a month and sometimes it might even happen 3 to 5 times a week, and it always seems at the most inconvenient moment of course.
I have no other firewall or anti-virus program running, but I do have the Microsoft Windows firewall installed although I disabled that per instructions when I installed ZoneAlarm.
Sure hope the fix you suggest works but if it doesn't I will reply on this thread and let you know. It occurred to me also that I can disable the ZoneAlarm automatic update feature and just update manually only. I am in a habit of updating ZoneAlarm manually every morning anyway, just as I am with Windows update. Thanks!
