Default Issues on computer upgraded from Windows ME to Windows XP

I have a problem with ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite V 7.0.483.000 on a machine that has recently been upgraded from Windows ME to Windows XP SP2. During the anti-virus scan, it freezes at C:\windows\options\cabs\base2.cab. I know this to be a Windows ME only installation file that was apparently left behind during the XP upgrade.

I am considering copying this folder to a CD and then removing it from the computer, although I don't know if it will fix the problem, cause any operational issues, or that it's the only problem I will have. Has anyone seen this or have any suggestions?

    Thank you!

    Hi!
you may want to exclude (UNcheck) the file from the on demand scanning under the advance options of the ZA antivirus/antispyware tab (scan targets).

    Cheers,

<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> to the Zone Alarm User Forum.. Hmmm..? I have Good News and Bad News for you..It sounds like you may have some Windows ME files left behind, and ZoneAlarm 7.0 is designed to work with WinXP Service Pack 2 or later.and may not install if it finds any Win98/ME files..1.) First the Bad News..It is Sometimes very Difficult to Diagnose and fix a Computer from halfway across the Country,
without All the Details, without the ability to sit in front of your Computer Monitor and see what's going on..

    Dear Windows 98/98SE/Me Customer,

ZoneAlarm supports a balanced, multi-layered approach to security. An important part of this approach includes keeping software updated with the latest security patches.

    <B class=headblack2>Support Discontinued[/B]
On July 11, 2006, Microsoft will end support for Windows 98, 98SE and Me, which will have the resulting effect of making these operating systems less secure (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/sup...ofsupport.mspx). Windows 98/Me are older operating systems, and are therefore inherently more vulnerable to attacks than newer operating systems. Now that Microsoft will no longer provide security updates to these operating systems any PC running them will become increasingly prone to security vulnerabilities.

<B class=headblack2>Accordingly, ZoneAlarm will cease to support Windows 98/98SE/Me with the introduction of our version 6.5 ZoneAlarm family of products[/B] including ZoneAlarm
    Internet Security Suite, ZoneAlarm
    Pro, ZoneAlarm
    Antivirus, ZoneAlarm
    Anti-Spyware, and ZoneAlarm
.<P class=headblack2>Note about pre-6.5 ZoneAlarmproducts:<UL class=body><LI>Pre-6.5 products will continue to run on the Windows 98/98SE/Me operating system. However, there are a few new and advanced protection features in ZoneAlarm products that will not run due to technical limitations of this operating system. ZoneAlarm strongly recommends upgrading to a supported and current version of the Windows operating system. <LI>ZoneAlarm may end services to pre-6.5 products at any time. </LI>[/list]

There are no plans to discontinue support for any other Microsoft operating systems. This announcement applies to consumer products only and does not affect enterprise products.</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Thanks to both of you for your responses.

Fax, I hadn't thought of excluding the file/directory (duhhhhh). Good one!

GeorgeV, I certainly realize how hard it is to troubleshoot a computer from afar since everyone I know calls me for help. Before I became disabled I was an EE designing avionics test software and hardware. Thank you for helping me recognize the smell by including the link to support. Sometimes the old brain just goes blank....

    Have a happy!
