Default No Response at Windows Welcome / Login Screen

    Hello,

If I leave my PC unattended and come back to find the X Welcome screen. I normally would click on my username, so that I could type in my password. However, when I do this, nothing happens and pressing the keys does not make the PC respond.

Pressing CTRL-ALT-DELETE, might make the PC response, but it takes a long time.

I notice the only way to get a response within 5 seconds is to pull the ADSL cable out, so that the internet connection has been dropped.

I don't know what is causing this problem, but I am wondering if Zonealarm is too busy doing stuff to let the focus go to the Welcome screen?. How do I find out what the PC was doing whilst unattended?

Normally, I would run up Windows Task Manager and find out which program is hogging the PC, but is there a way I can find out....

I have this problem also. I'm running Win XP Pro / SP3. Sometimes the Win login just goes dead, forcing me to reboot.

I have another problem which I believe is related. When I log out of Windows, my PC hangs at the screen where Windows says "saving your settings." At that point, neither Ctl/Alt/Del nor my PC's On/Off button will work. I must pull the plug and plug it back in to get my PC back.

I did not have these problems when I used Norton AV. They started when I switched to ZoneAlarm. I don't want to switch back because Norton has other problems I don't want to deal with. Except for this one thing, I much prefer ZoneAlarm so I want to fix it.

I tried going into ZA Security Suite > Program Control > Programs and manually setting all Windows programs to "Allow." That did not solve the problem.

    Any other ideas?
