thank you for answering my post. my apologies for posting the wrong version of my cpu. it is a system32, i somehow, by mistake, chose the wrong option in posting my version.
i followed all the steps to re-install zass, everything went as planned. do i now restore my security settings from the previous install? i am not sure if i will introduce the same problems as before.
thanks in advance

Thank you for your Feedback..I would not Restore the Security Backup Setting from the Previous Install, as they may Re-introduce old problems..Better to start off with New Settings and new Backup..--------------------------------------------------------

i followed all the steps and did the clean install. i did not restore my security settings.
xp will still not shut down without first shutting down zass.
if i boot the computer and let everything load, then shutdown the computer, it will shutdown with zass running.
advice, please

i just re read my post and i should clear up the confusing part.
if i boot up and after everything loads, not do anything else, but shut down the computer, it will shut down properly. it seems to be a problem if i use the computer for normal, daily stuff.
thanks

one thing is that zonealarm is the last program to shut down for security reasons
when you shutdown your system, you may need to take the extra time to shut any non-essential programs (like instant messengers) before shutting the system down
i have noticed if i try to shut my system down with yahoo running it will take forever untill i shut the messenger down manually (with or without za running)
thanks robdog

resolved! ok, asked za tech help and got the following response:

1.) Click on Start -> Run and type Regedit

2.) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l

Click on the + next to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, you should see some folders populate below HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Then click the + next to SYSTEM. You should then see a CurrentControlSet folder under SYSTEM. Click the + next to CurrentControlSet. Click Control. In the right side of Control look for - WaitToKillServiceTimeout

3.) Right-click on WaitToKillServiceTimeout, click Modify

4.) Change the Value Data to 20000

5.) Click Ok

so far so good. i will report back if this did not resolve the problem.
thanks for the help.
