Default Icon on task bar

Sometime the zonealarm icon appears on my task bar when I turn on my XP computer, and sometimes it is absent. Why? Shouldn't it always appear? If it's not there, does it mean it's not protecting my computer?

Operating System:Windows XP Home Edition
Software Version:8.0
Product Name:ZoneAlarm Antivirus

Delete the contents of the Windows Prefetch Folder (the contents not the folder) and Reboot the Computer
C:\Windows\Prefetch If you are unable to Delete all of the Contents of the Windows Prefetch Folder, Boot into Safe Mode and
Delete the Contents of the Windows Prefetch Folder from there (the contents not the folder)
While you are in the Windows Directory, also Delete all of the Contents of the Windows TEMP Folder
C:\Windows\TEMP If you are unable to Delete all of the Contents of the Windows TEMP Folder, Boot into Safe Mode and
Delete the Contents of the Windows TEMP Folder from there (the contents not the folder)
Also: RightClick the Task Bar and LeftClick Properties
Disable the Box: Hide inactive Icons then LeftClick Apply then LeftClick OK
If none of the above works, try this:
Open ZoneAlarm
Navigate to:
Alerts & Logs/Advanced/System Tray Alert/
If the Box "Enable system tray icon alert" is Enabled.....
Disable it, Click Apply then OK.....then Reboot the Computer.....
Re-Enable it, Click Apply and OK again.....then Reboot the Computer again.
If the Box "Enable system tray icon alert" is Disabled.....
Enable it, Click Apply then OK.....then Reboot the Computer.
NOTE: ZoneAlarm Security Protection Initializes very early during the Windows Boot Sequence, long before the
Windows Desktop appears, the ZoneAlarm Icon in the System Tray has no Direct Influence toward the ZoneAlarm
Security Protection Modules other than giving the User the ability to Open ZoneAlarm Interface, Engage/Disengage Internet Lock,
Stop/Start all Internet activity, Enable/Disable Game Mode, Access Help, and Shutdown ZoneAlarm, and therefore should
be considered, looked upon, and viewed as an System Tray Tool for the ZoneAlarm Product.
NOTE: There are six ways to check the Security Status of ZoneAlarm:
(1) Open the ZoneAlarm Interface and View Overview/Status
(2) ZoneAlarm Program Alerts (if enabled for antivirus/antispyware) ZoneAlarm Interface/Alerts & Logs/Advanced/Alert Events/
(3) View the Status of the Windows Security Center in Control Panel
(4) View the Windows Event Logs
(5) Check the Status of the ZoneAlarm TrueVector Internet Monitor Service in Windows Services (default = started/automatic)
(6) Check the Status of the ZoneAlarm LEGACY Non-Plug and Play Drivers in Windows Device Manager:
*****(6a) From the Device Manager Tool Bar Click Veiw/Show hidden devices
*****(6b) Navigate to and Expand the Tree: Non-Plug and Play Drivers
*****(6c) Check the Properties of two files: (srescan and vsdatant), both should report "This device is working properly."

I'll try some of these things.... BUT. The important thing is that my computer is protected even if the icon isn't showing. Right?

Some times Your ZA Configuration can get corrupted, which may result in erratic behavior..ZA has incorporated a new way to Reset DataBase files so users don't need to go into Safe mode.

To repair this problem, please follow the steps below. Please note that
this will remove your program permission settings (so you may want to make
note of them), but re-establishing them is a simple process.

1.) Hold down the Ctrl and Shift keys together
2.) Right click on the ZA icon near your clock in the system tray lower right corner
3.) Choose 'Reset' from the box that comes up
4.) Choose Yes on the Reset Settings dialog box
5.) When prompted, choose OK to restart your system
6.) Follow the on screen configuration prompts after reboot

After running overnight scans I have double program icons on my task bar and can only close one of them, the other can only be removed by rebooting! This problem has been around for years! I know it is not critical but it is extremely annoying!

The problem can sometimes be cured by disabling the screensaver but that is not what I would call a 'professional' solution!

Given the length of time this problem has been around perhaps the only real solution is to use another internet security suite!
