Default Does ZA Anti Virus update Windows date last accessed?

I'm in the process of tuning my defragger and one of the options is to move the most frequently accessed files to the faster part of the harddrive.

But if ZoneAlarm updates the dates last accessed when it does a virus scan then sorting files by last accessed date is meaningless and won't help.

So: Does ZoneAlarm's antivirus update the Windows date last accessed when it does a virus scan?

    Thanks,

    Russ

Hi!not sure I follow the question, have you tried to scan a folder (right click with the mouse on a folder) and then check the date of the files?I did it and I don't see any changes in the file accessed date. You can do the same and check.Did I miss something?Cheers,Fax

    Thanks Fax!

I didn't think to test it. LOL. Occam's razor to the rescue!

I'll give it a go and see if I get the same result.

    Fax:

This is not being as easy as I would have expected.

If I use My Computer to view a file's properties it changes the last access date to NOW. Yikes. So I can't tell.

    How did you do it?

When I do that the last access date gets updated.

I just set Windows 'Details' to always show last access date.

Then I found a program that has not been accessed (adobe installer exe) in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader

Navigated back and forth a couple times to be sure just viewing the file didn't change the access date.

Then I navigated back to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0 and right clicked on the Reader folder and then clicked scan with ZoneAlarm.

Going back into the directory after the scan it appears that the date last accessed does not change via the scan. But if I so much as hover my cursor over the filename it DOES change the last access date. Accessing properties definitely updates the last access date.

    Wow.

    TOUCHY!

I think trying to sort on last access isn't going to help.

    Thanks for your input!

Hi!sorry, can't replicate this both on XP or VISTA platform, been testing now.The only explanation I have is that the file get accessed not by ZA but by something else.Is the OS installation clean of third party software? Or there are other 'on access' tools including malware running? You could try to start your system only with ZA and standard OS services. Like this:1.) Click Start -> Run
2.) Type MSConfig in the run box and click OK
3.) Once in MSConfig, click the Startup Tab
4.) Remove the checks from everything except ZLClient
    5.) Click the Services Tab
6.) Place a check in "Hide All Microsoft Services"
7.) Now remove checks from everything other than TrueVector Internet
    Monitor, and click OK.
8.) Restart your computerStill changing? Not sure this will remove all booting third party software but at least should be a quite clean boot.
NOTE: You can place your computer back into a normal startup process by
going back into msconfig and choosing the Normal Startup option on the
    General tab.
Cheers,FaxP.S. Are you running the latest ZA version?

I am using a couple other utilities:

    Unlocker
    Eraser
    ISO Image resizer
    Groove

Not sure which of these is doing it. But I use all of them often, so I'm not going to disable them.

    Interesting!

I think I'll wait a month (when I'm not poking around and 'accidentally' updating the the last access date) and then defrag based on access date.

    Thanks for your help Fax!
