Exclamation hard drive encryption with ZA Extreme Security 2010

I am considering purchasing ZA Extreme Security 2010 but have misgivings about what could happen if my hard drive crashes and I try to recover the encrypted data from the HD. I assume that if I am using a backup external hard drive, the stuff it copies from the main HD will also be in encrypted form. I have found no help in the knowledge base or in FAQ. I could direct my question to ZA as the vendor, but I get the impression from the website that I would have to pay for a call. I can see paying for telephone support for a product I own, but not for paying to find out about something I might want to buy.

Can anyone help with the recovery concerns expressed above?

Exclamation Re: hard drive encryption with ZA Extreme Security 2010

When Full Disk Encryption is activated :
    • Full Disk Encryption only runs on laptops.
    • Full Disk Encryption supports up to six hard disks, which together can have a maximum total of 12 encrypted volumes.
    • Partition resizing or repartitioning not supported

    • Do not change partition size or repartition your disk when Disk Encryption is installed. This is not supported and may result in loss of data due to disk failure.
    • Stripe or volume sets not supported
On Windows XP, Full Disk Encryption should not be installed on partitions that are part of stripe or volume sets.
    • Compressed root directory not supported
Full Disk Encryption cannot be installed if the root-directory (or root directories) is/are compressed. The root directory must be decompressed before Full Disk Encryption is installed. However, subdirectories of the root directory may be compressed.

Your external hard drive will not be encrypted. Your laptop's hard drive will be encrypted so if it crashes, you won't be able to retrieve anything from it. But, any backups you've made on external drives, DVDs, network servers, etc will still be accessible.

    Hope this helps

    Hello,

During the install process of HDE your given the opportunity to upload a security file to ZA for safe keeping in the event you have some kind of issue a Decryption bootable CD can be made.

You will also be given the opportunity to create a decryption CD ISO which you must burn yourself to a CD and store away for safe keeping.

Plus you can do as suggest already back up to an external drive which we will not encrypt.

I have a question about creating recovery disks. Can I create more than one? For example, can I create a USB Key recovery disk. and then immediately rerun the wizard to create an ISO? will they both still work? I am wondering because there seems to be some logging of creation times going on, which might suggest that only the most recently produced recovery device might be accepted.

You can make as many as you want.

But if you either decrypt and re-encrypt or change the login password then you just create new recovery media.

The old media is no longer valid for your drive.
