Thread: ZAISS protects Master Boot Record?

Default ZAISS protects Master Boot Record?

I have a machine running Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite 8.0.298 and Windows XP SP2. The MBR got tweaked years ago when I was running System Commander. I am trying to replace it. I have tried various utilities and even XP Recovery Console FIXMBR. In all cases, it works for the next boot into Windows. By the time I exit windows again, the MBR has been replaced with what it was before I started the update process. If I do the fix and then just boot to a floppy or boot to the recover console, the MBR stays changed. As soon as I login into Windows normally, it has been reset.

Is Zone Alarm doing this? Does Zone Alarm ISS detect MBR changes or try to "help" me by keeping it static?

I am trying to replace the MBR, because when the machine boots from the hard drive, it stops and asks you to choose which partition to load from. Not the end of the world, but annoying.

    Hi!
No, not that I know. ZA is not a recovery/backup tool but rather protection/detection/prevention.

An easy test to do is to boot the system without ZA (ZA overview --> preferences --> UNcheck "load ZA.. at startup" --> Reboot) and check if the MBR is reverted back to its original status. if yes, then its not ZA.

Thanks. I will try that. I suspect its really some lingering part of System Commander, rather than Zone Alarm. Since ZAISS has the Anti Virus component, I didn't know if that included MBR protection.
