Thread: Standalone use

    Default Standalone use

I've got ZoneAlarm Extreme Security on all of the machines in my home.

One of these machines does not have access to the Internet (it used to but I have decided to unplug it and move it and the cable no longer reaches).

This machine keeps requesting access to the Internet to check for updates.

I want to turn this feature off.

I am only leaving ZA on this box in case someone plugs in a memory stick that has a virus (and yes, I realise by not having the connectivity a new virus may not be in the database but some protection is better than none).

How does one stop ZA requesting Internet access, please?

Here are several things to check..

1.) ZA Overview/Preferences.. change check for updates to Manually
2.) Anti-Virus/Anti-Spyware/Main page/ Click Advanced Options, click Updates, Un-check Enable Automatic AV updates

    Thanks. I'd done 1.) but not 2.).

A supplemental question - I don't suppose there is any way to download such updates and get them on to the machine manually is there? (I am assuming that ZA connects to a server and downloads just what it needs automatically so this would not be a behaviour that would be required usually).

    A ~~~ snip ~~~ standalone virus alternative would be ~~ bleep ~~~ .
You have to register it but it is free.

1.) ZoneAlarm must connect to the Checkpoint servers in order to update the ZA AV/As signature updates..

2.) since you have several computers, are they all connected to a Router?

Most Popular Routers include a Wireless Connection option, for computers located withing 200 feet or so..

3.) In reply to the advice by another User..

b.) some Computer Users think that if one Firewall and anti-Virus is good, two or three different ones running at the same time must be better?

Just One, Not Two -- Never use two software Firewalls at the same time. Completely uninstall one before installing another. Use the vendor's uninstall utility or if not available, use the Windows XP/Vista add/remove software tool in the control panel.

GeorgeV, thanks. That's what I assumed.

I do have a wireless router but this is an old desktop machine with no wireless which I have given to my son so he can play and do homework in his room and he's not allowed Internet connectivity in his room until he is a little older. What I may do is get a USB wireless dongle so that I can periodically go through and update any tools that might need it but otherwise leave him disconnected.
