Unhappy Gmail almost unusable after ZA update

Since I updated my ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite to v9 on Friday, I have found it virtually impossible to use Google Mail through the web browser interface. Selecting/changing a folder or opening a message now takes a very long time, during which my CPU is running at 100%. What's going on? How can I avoid this? Thanks for any advice.

What is your configuration - OS, browser, etc.?

I see no delay accessing gmail on my system. If you open Windows Task Manager, what process is using the CPU cycles?

Here is my config: WinXP Pro SP3 with all critical updates and IE7.

    ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite:

    ZoneAlarm Security Suite version:9.1.008.000
    TrueVector version:9.1.008.000
    Driver version:9.1.008.000
    Anti-virus engine version:8.0.2.42
    Anti-virus signature DAT file version:996679200
    AntiSpam version:6.0.0.2383

Well, the obvious difference beween our setups is IE7 vs IE8 and the fact that on your PC, IE is the process that is getting all the CPU cycles.

Is that the only website that runs slow or locks up? Do you have any add-on toolbars (like Google) installed?

I'm not sure if IE8 still has this option, but have you tried running IE without any add-ons?

    Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)

You may have to wait for someone with IE8 to respond with their thoughts.

I've been using IE8 for quite a while now, and I didn't have any problems with it until I updated ZA. I don't think that's just a coincidence.

The only website on which I've noticed such a serious slow-down is Google Mail.

I've had warnings pop up about websites that I know are prefectly safe, telling me to leave them immediately, but that's another matter.

The only add-ons that I have enabled are the ZoneAlarm Toolbar/Registrar.

I usually wait at least 5 or 6 weeks before installing a ZA update in the hope that any major bugs will have been ironed out by then. Stupidly, on this occasion, I clicked install as soon as the notification pop-up appeared.

I just disabled the ZoneAlarm Toolbar/Registrar add-ons, but that made no difference. Google Mail was still painfully slow, with Internet Explorer consuming virtually 100% of my CPU cycles.

Anybody got any idea what could be happening to cause this?

    Thanks!

Thumbs down Re: Gmail almost unusable after ZA update

Just completely uninstalled ZASS and then reinstalled it with "clean" settings. No improvement whatsoever. Maybe I should give up and install Norton instead. I just haven't got the time for this ...

Okay, even though life's too short as it is, I decided to waste a few more of my precious hours on this Earth trying to get to the bottom of the problem.

So, I reset IE8 to its default condition (Tools - Internet Options - Advanced - Reset) and restarted the PC. Lo and behold, Google Mail worked as before (ie normal response times, no CPU overload). Fantastic!

Then I enabled the ZoneAlarm Toolbar. Bang! Google Mail returned to a near comatose state.

I don't know what the ZoneAlarm Toolbar is doing to Google Mail, but it sure doesn't like it.

Any technical geniuses got an answer?
