Default Zone Alarm Firewall - Free

I have installed ZA 9.1.007.002 firewall only, as I use Avast for on access scanning.
I have noticed that since installing the system has slowed up quite considerably.
On checking the system loads with Process Explorer I see that ZL client exe. is active continuously and accounts for about a 15-20% CPU load. This continuous load has a detrimental effect upon overall system performance.
I would like to now if this is normal and if not what can I do to reduce it.
Previously used Comdo firewall but got feed up with all the interruptions and lockouts so I am looking to ZA in the hopes of being able to improve on this.
    System winxp-sp3- home, IE 7/FF
Would be grateful for any help and advise.
    Thank you for reading this.

    Hi!

try to remove the ZA toolbar... or fully reset ZA. Add ZA folders (in program files and system32) to AVAST exclusions.

    Hi!

    1. The simplest way is to remove (from your OS uninstalling section) and re-install ZA without the toolbar (uncheck the option while in the install process).
    2. Sorry don't use AVAST, so I don't know

    In Avast:
Standard shield > Customize > Advanced
    Click Add
Enter the path and add \* at the end to exclude everything in the directory.
You can also do it for specific programs.

The easiest way is first navigate to c:\program files\<any folder>
copy the address to notepad, add "\*"
copy all that into avast. The reason for this convoluted method is Avast doesn't have a browse button.
