Default Zone Alarm Firewall - Free

    11December2009

    Greetings.
I have read about this problem concerning ZAPro but only here re-ZA Free.
The two solutions for ZAP I have seen do not seem to apply to ZAF.
The ZAP problem has been said to be ZA debug being turned on by default.
Ctrl-Shift-RightClick on the ZA tray icon does nothing with ZAF.
Is ZA debug the problem here with ZAF?

    I have 3 XP laptops (G, i & T) - 2 (i & T) with XPPro.
On the 2 XPP laptops (i & T), zlclient CPU usage is 30% to 40%
when the laptops are idle. I don't know if the XPP connection
    is a coincidence or not.

In any case I would like to ask/know if there is or will be a fix
for this problem with ZAF? I have reinstalled 8.0.298 for the time being.
ZAF did not notify me of the ZAF 9.1 update either.

I use Avira on laptops G & i & no AntiVir on the other (T)
because laptop T is too old & never online. I did not install the ZA toolbar
(which I have read elsewhere is considered spyware ...)
It is not clear to me why zlclient "malfunctions" on laptops i & T and works
fine on G. The two newer laptops (G & i) have about the same specifications.

Guru George (or whoever) said somewhere ZA will outgrow older laptops.
My opinion is that the better software becomes slimmer & faster
    not bigger & slower ...

    Any helpful replies/insights appreciated.
    Thank you.
    Regards,
    AEN

I agree with George depending upon how old the hardware is and what the specs are - not all zoftware will run on older laptops; and it is also very dependent upon what else is running coincident with zone alarm. Remnants of firewalls not completely uninstalled - yet still present in files and registry entries can cause conflict. And trial security software downloaded and timed out can be an issue as well, as the functionality is gone, but the software is still present on the computer, if not totally and completely removed, thus removing any potential conflicts. Nearly all the major commercial and free security vendors now have special uninstall tools which need to be used and there are a number of general tools out there which can remove all traces of security products, Namely Revouninstaller and Appremover. Every computer is unique with its hardware and software installations. Why it works on one and not two others is not an easy question to answer. Some have had difficulties and removed all security apps and reinstalled za free with success, then followed with reinstalling all their other security apps - for others there was no difference.

Lastly, you may be interested in trying out the latest Beta which addresses the following:

    New Beta released 9.1.045.000
New ZoneAlarm beta has been released 9.1.045.000

Fixed issues between 9.1.007.000 and 9.1.045.000:

-New AV Scan modes and changes to AV advanced options
-The second AV scan is now a quick scan
-AV update reliability including server failover has been added
-Subsequent AV updates will complete much faster if you are already up to date
-Added a feature to the diagnostic utility to help diagnose high CPU issues
-Changes to Advanced Download Protection have been made to improve reliability
-The ability to disable Advanced Download Protection from the Browser Security Toolbar has been added
-Support for ForceField and FireFox 3.5.5
    -Various stability and reliability improvements

    Download from - www.zonealarm.com/beta

If not the beta, then two options, revert to older version which was stable on your computer - which you indicated you did on one computer; or with a current za license contact live chat, or if only using free firewalls it may be time to explore other free firewalls which will run on your particular computer configuration.

    Greetings.
    Thanks for the reply.

I never said I do not agree with the following ..

However, some developers will begin writing for Win7 and abandon XP,
even though MS will support XPsp3 until at least early 2014.
My opinion is that the better programs will run on XP systems & Win7 systems
and perform better than they did as just XP/Vista apps.

    ~~ Snip ~~

I have been using ZA for 10+ years. I used ZA on my oldest laptop, T,
back when T had Win98 & then WinME on it. I had to re-source a firewall
when ZL dumped WinME support. That was almost impossible. I've now been
evaluating firewall freeware options again. It's not easy to replace ZA.
I hope I can continue to use ZA on laptops G & i. Today I decided to remove
ZA from T and to use the XP firewall. T is almost never online, so the XP
firewall will be good enough for the rare occasions when T is online
(to download Java updates & etc ...). I can even have the XP firewall running
    on T during normal, day-to-day, offline, LAN-only operations - which I could
not do with ZA, because T does not have the CPU power to run ZA & also
the MultiMedia apps I predominantly run on T.

I'll keep running 8.0.298 on laptop i until the next official ZA release -
which I hope will solve this zlclient idle cpu usage bug. I noticed
that the installed size of ZA 9.1 on G is about 20mb but was only about
12mb on i & T. I did not install the toolbar on any of the laptops.
Any ideas on why the install sizes are different?

    Any helpful replies/insights appreciated.
    Thank you.

    AEN
