Hi, first time here on the board and I hope someone can help me.
I have a Windows XP (SP3) desktop at home which has 3 separate login accounts and running ZoneAlarm 8. I ran into a virus/malware problem the other day that ZoneAlarm alerted right away. It was one of those fake security download popups. So I ran anti-virus and anti-spyware programs and everything seemed to have cleared up.
But now I can't get to any http sites (I'm using another machine to access this messageboard). I can get to https (secure) urls but not http. I've tried both Internet Explorer and Google Chrome, same problem. Even more weird, if I login as another user on my computer everything is fine. For example, my wife can get to http sites from her Windows login on the same physical machine without a problem.
So I know I have connectivity, I know that it isn't a browser issue (having same issue with both IE and Chrome), I know that other users on the machine can access the internet without a problem but on my login I can't get to http sites. Weird!!
I've dug around on the internet and tried a couple of things and then someone suggested that ZoneAlarm may actually be part of the problem or may not have completely stopped the malware in time. I have no idea what to do and someone even suggested reinstalling Windows.
I would think the problem could be solved without going that route, correct? I'm no techie, but I just can't understand how IE or Chrome can get to an HTTPS site but can't get to HTTP. Is it a networking issue?
Can anyone please help? Suggestions? Thanks!
