    Default Strange behavior from update

I booted up my laptop that I haven't had on for a month or so and saw that I needed to update my Zone Alarm Security Suite. I did a manual update and got a message that Anti-virus/anti-spyware update was complete. However, when I compared the Anti-virus/Anti-spyware engine version on my desktop it was different:
The Desktop version was 8.02.42 DAT file version 100961224 AntiSpam version 6.0.0.2383
The laptop Dat file version was different. I did 2 or 3 more manual updates and the DAT file version on the laptop matched the desktop. What I do not understand is why it took 3 or more manual updates to update. Also when I do a "Check for Updates" on either system I get 100% done and it says Downloaded an update for Anti-virus/anti-spyware but the DAT file does not change. I always get this message if I do a "check for updates". I think I used to get message that my system was up-to-date. Version Information is as follows:
    ZoneAlarm Security Suite version 9.1.008.000
    TrueVector security engine version 9.1.008.000
    Driver version 9.1.008.000
    Anti-virus/Anti-spyware engine version 8.0.2.42,DAT file version 1009612224
    AntiSpam version 6.0.0.2383

Best way to confirm an update is to check your Entry Detail.

Look under Alerts & Logs | Log Viewer | Alert Type | Anti-virus/Anti-spy at the bottom left : Entry Detail

I copy & paste from Entry Detail the following.

    e.g. of Manual Update

Description Anti-virus successfully received the latest dat file and/or engine updates
    Date / Time 2010-01-13 23:12:22-6:00
    Type Update
    Virus name
    Filename
    Action Update completed
    Mode Manual
    E-mail

    e.g. of Auto Update

esmith : If your Dat file doesn't change. Most likely corrupt settings.

To repair this problem, please follow the steps below. Please note that this
will remove your program permission settings (so you may want to make
note of them), but re-establishing them is a simple process.

1.) Hold down the Ctrl and Shift keys together
2.) Right click on the ZA icon near your clock
3.) Choose 'Reset' from the box that comes up
4.) Choose Yes on the Reset Settings dialog box
5.) When prompted, choose OK to restart your system
6.) Follow the on screen configuration prompts after reboot

Do not restore old settings. You could reintroduce corruption.Accept the default settings.

Also forgot to mention that the following was added in version 9.0.083.000

    Footnote :

    * New unified anti-virus and anti-spyware engine:
o Scans 80%-90% faster and combines anti-virus and anti-spyware into one scan
o More advanced scan options- riskware, ADS, heuristic scanning, and more exception options
    o Additional on-access scan controls
o On-access scanning now detects spyware
