Default Question for Guru George - Host Process Windows Services

    Hello, George

After searching the forum for the right settings for (Generic) Host Process for Windows Services, I feel a bit confused. [I put Generic between brackets, as this word apparently is not being used in that description in ZA on Win7 Ultimate 64.]

    I have three computers,
    - one desktop with XP Prof, SP3
    - one laptop with XP Home, SP3
    - one desktop with Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
All with the latest Windows updates.

I am running ZoneAlarm Security Suite version:9.1.008.000.

After the 21 day learning process, all three computers had checkmarks for HPWS, so also for Server Internet.
The latter confuses me, since according to what I have read, this should be a red one.
Question: Has the learning process made an error or what?

One more thing: in Win7 there is also a HPWS for Windows\SysWOW64\svchost.exe>
That one has a red mark for Server Internet.

    So, more confusion for me.

I'd appreciate your shedding some light into my darkness.

    Thanks in advance.

    Kind regards,

    Ananda

Here is my two cents worth..

NOTE: Make sure all of the following Programs have Trusted and Internet access (2 Green Check Marks)
:a.) All Microsoft and Windows Programs have Green Check marks for Trusted and Internet Access..
b.) Generic Host Process for win32 Services (svchost.exe) also allow Trusted Server Rights
c.) IE Crash Detectiond.) Internet Explorer or FireFoxe.)
    d.) Malicious Software Removal Tool
f.) True Vector Service (If it is listed)
    g.) Zone Alarm Client
    h.) Zone Alarm Updating Client
i.) Your Email Client needs Trusted, Internet access and Send Mail all need Green check Marks..

    George,

While I really appreciate your answer, it is not exactly a straightforward answer, at least not in this 71 years person's mind. A bit more light is needed, I'm afraid. Sorry, don't curse me! :-)

So: should I block or allow Server Internet for the Generic Host Process...?

And if I allow it, what's the risk? In layman's terms?

    Thanks for your patience.

    Sorry,

b.) Generic Host Process for win32 Services (svchost.exe) also allow Trusted Server Rights

That mean "YES" allow Server Rights if Generic Host Process ask for it.. (this a very important Windows Service, that if Blocked, then many Windows functions will not work correctly)

On All of my Computers I have given it 4 Green Check marks..

    Thanks for your patience, George.
The last line was the most straightforward: 4 green checkmarks.

Why my confusion? In my ZA there are two options for Access and two for Server.
    Both Trusted and Internet.
When you say for Server: Trusted Server Rights, then in my mind that says nothing about Server Internet Rights.

There was a time one was explicitly told to *block* Server Internet rights...
If I have understood you well, that story is now simple past tense.

So now I have a green checkmark for:
    ACCESS: Trusted and Internet
    SERVER: Trusted and Internet

And no, this is not a question of being a person that doubts everything, but about a layman trying to apply the right checkmark for terms that are different, and he does not understand the underlying implications about.

So once again: thank you! My ZA-mind can sleep in peace now!

Thumbs up Re: Question for Guru George - Host Process Windows Services

    Your Welcome,

Normally you would only use the first three green check marks for windows XP SP3, But I have seen Windows Vista and Windows 7 OS asking for Internet Access also, So I think it is OK for Windows Files?

But for other Third Party Utilities that Check for Updates, Only the First three Green Checkmarks are needed..

Have a good day and stay warm and Dry..
