Default Zonealarm breaking winsock, losing network connectivity in win7x64

I'm having a big problem with Zonealarm Extreme Security in which after a few hours I lose my connection to my home network. When it happens, I am unable to connect to anything on the network, including the router, my other computers on the network, or anything on the internet. My newsgroup reader provides the only clue as to what is happening as it tells me "there is not enough memory to initialize the winsock driver", other than this message I get no errors in the event log.

The affected computer has a wired connection to the router, one of the XP computers has a wired connection and the other has a wireless connection. My other computers are both using windows xp pro x86 and also have zonealarm but this problem never happens on them. I had the same problem with zonealarm in vista home premium x86 on this machine, but I removed vista and put xp on here and the problem didn't happen. This happens on a clean install of Win7x64 with only zonealarm installed too.

    Affected versions of zonealarm...
    Extreme Security 9.0.114.000
    Extreme Security 9.1.061.000 beta
Security Suite (free trial, current version)

    System Specs
System Manufacturer/Model Number: Dell XPS 720
    OS: Windows 7 professional x64
CPU: QuadCore Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, 2400 MHz
Motherboard: Dell XPS 720 - nVIDIA nForce 680i SLI
Ethernet Card: integrated Broadcom NetXtreme 5754
    Router: DLink DIR-655
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT (512 MB) SLi
Sound Card: Creative X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Pro

All of my hardware drivers are up to date.

The only way for me to restore my connection is to reboot the computer. I have tried repairing winsock and LSP but the problem returns everytime. I have also tried disabling ipv6. Using the repair and diagnostics of the nic card and connection does not work, it only reports that there is a problem causing the test to fail when trying to connect to the microsoft test address. I have also tried disabling and reenabling the nic card. I have also run deep virus, rootkit, and malware scans, and have run memtest86+ for 17 passes (around 34 hours worth of testing).

No matter what I do though, I still get the same "not enough memory to initialize winsock" problem.

    Hi!
you seem to use old ZAX versions. You should update to current version both retail or beta.

    Retail: we are at 9.1.008.000
    Beta: we are at 9.1.118.000

After install double check that your DNS/DHCP is set as trusted in the ZA firewall section as well as that the ZA trusted zone is set to MEDIUM and not HIGH. Remove the version installed before installing the latest version and do not keep any previous settings.

While using the beta you should be reporting the issues to the beta feedback form and not here. ZA staff does not monitor this board. We are all users

Sorry, I got the version numbers wrong because I was taking the numbers from the other computer.

The Extreme Security retail I had on here was 9.1.008
The Extreme Security beta I had was 9.1.061
The Security Suite I had was 9.1.008

I only had the beta installed long enough to see if it had the problem, and then I tried the security suite. I currently don't have any of them installed, I've been fighting with this issue since October, trying everything I could think of, and it's come down to zonealarm being the problem. I uninstalled it six days ago and the problems have gone away.

I did try reporting the issues on the beta feedback form, but the page spent the whole day not working for me, so I gave up on it. That was over a week ago though, and at the time I didn't know if zonealarm was actually the problem or not.

    Hi!
I would suggest you try the latest beta and see how it goes. There has been a lot of fixes. www.zonealarm.com/beta

And do not change any default settings while testing. Also note that if it is a common issue across platform it may depend on a software you have on the system. I have seen this problems if ZA is installed with other security tools including toolbars (e.g. AVG).

I tried submitting the beta feedback again, still getting the same problem. I fill out every field and it tells me...

"Errors Occurred! Correct displayed errors and try again, please."

It doesn't tell me what the error is, wipes out every field, and makes me start over... you can understand why I gave up on it last time.

Anyhow, I'll give the new beta a try, I don't have any other security software installed other than the malicious software removal tool stuff which is regularly updated with windows, and I've got malwarebytes installed. Malwarebytes is also installed on my two XP machines, but they're not suffering from this problem, so I don't know if that could be blamed. I pretty much have the same software installed on all of them though.

    Hi!
post really very very short messages. Two or three lines maximum.
Only forward more info (if you really need to) once you have received the e-mail with the case number.

No use to post old beta build feedback, test the new.

Okay, got the new beta installed with factory settings. Trusted zone is set to medium, network is added as trusted, loopback adapter is trusted, and DHCP is trusted. It doesn't list DNS though, but that should be using the same router address as the DHCP, I assume?

Thanks for the help, Fax. Any other things I need to check for? Sometimes it can take this problem several hours, even up to a day before it happens, so it'll probably be a while before I know anything.

No luck, I still get the same winsock memory problem with the current beta.

I'm sorry, The Only Support for BETA Test versions is thru the BETA Feedback / Bug Report form method.. available on the BETA Download page..

If you still have the problem, you must File a Feedback Report with Details to the BETA Developers..

update, this happens even in the free zonealarm firewall, so it looks like the problem is happening in the firewall components itself, and not a problem with forcefield or the virus and spyware components.
