Default ZA (free version 9.1.007.002) breaks Sonos

I use a product called Sonos which allows us to play music anywhere in our house via players which attach to our stereos. The players communicate with each other via a wireless mesh network and are controlled from my PC via a desktop app.

I just installed the free version of Zone Alarm and now my Sonos desktop app cannot see the Sonos players.

    • When I first ran the Sonos app Zone Alarm asked permission and I granted it.
    • In ZA's Program Control | Programs The Sonos Desktop app is green checkmarks all the way across.
    • If I clear the ZA log and then attempt to connect to a player via the Sonos app the connection fails, but there are NO ENTRIES in the ZA log.
    • If I turn the ZA firewall OFF and then attempt to connect to a player via the Sonos app the connection SUCCEEDS (that's how I know ZA is the culprit).

So how do I get ZA to not block Sonos and why doesn't it issue warning or messages or log entries when it does?

You'll find the answer on the Sonos FAQs: https://sonos.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/s...hp?p_faqid=183

    Google is your friend.

Yeah, no kidding, please cut me some credit -- before posting my question I did all the steps in that link, and then I called Sonos and the tech remoted over to my PC and together we did them again! Only by turning off the Zone Alarm firewall will the Sonos App work.

And if those things had not been done properly how would it explain why ZA wasn't putting anything in the log when it blocked Sonos?

Well, I'm not a mind reader and I don't have a crystal ball either.

Maybe someone else here does. Good luck.

But even if you were assuming that I hadn't done those things, or had done them incorrectly, it still doesn't explain why nothing was getting logged.

When ZA blocks something what determines whether it logs the blocking action?

    Hi!
not sure the free version has advanced logging but try to set everything under logs as HIGH.
To me looks more a corruption of the ZA settings. i.e. settings are not kept or not respected.

For the latter I would suggest a reset:

1.) Hold down the Ctrl and Shift keys together
2.) Right click on the ZA icon near your clock
3.) Choose 'Reset' from the box that comes up
4.) Choose Yes on the Reset Settings dialog box
5.) When prompted, choose OK to restart your system
6.) Follow the on screen configuration prompts after reboot

After the reset try to follow SONOS configuration again.

It is essential you do NOT alter ZA firewall zone settings and let ZA autoconfigure itself at install. It is also essential you set the ZA trusted zone to MEDIUM and not HIGH. In other words, do NOT change any default settings.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,

Since there is absolutely no way for ZA to fix this IF its our issue in the first place, because we don't have a Sonos device or a network of there devices.

Since your in contact with Sonos please ask they escalate your issue internally and contact us so that we can get one of these units from them for testing.

IF Sonos really thinks its a big enough issue they will send us a unit for testing and work directly with both our Dev Dept's to correct the issue.

If they don't contact us well.......
