Thread: AV*.tmp Files in C:\Windows\Temp Filling Drive

Question AV*.tmp Files in C:\Windows\Temp Filling Drive

Beginning around November 9, 2009 , 30-40 MB temporary files with names av*.tmp began to be left in my C:\Windows\Temp directory on a daily basis. I think that the this may be associated with the upgrade to Internet Security Suite 9.1.008 in early November. (Earlier versions and the current version seem to leave 1 or 2 1 KB ZLT*.tmp files each day which aren't a problem space-wise.) Updating may have slowed too. If this is what is happening, do you have any suggestions to get Internet Security Suite to clean up its temp files? I'm running Windows XP.

Internet Security Suite will not clean up these temp files on its own. I see the same type of temp files in my WinXP Pro C:\windows\temp folder. That is why I run CCleaner fairly often. You can download it for free here:

Its a great free utility program that I have been using for years.

    ZoneAlarm Security Suite version:9.1.008.000
    TrueVector version:9.1.008.000
    Driver version:9.1.008.000

How would you use CCleaner to do this? I ran it and inclided Zone Alarm logs, but all the av*.tmp files remain.

The Zone Alarm logs are the information that you see in "Alerts and Logs" in the ZASS menu (AV/AS, Firewall, OS Firewall, Program).

The files in C:\Windows\Temp are temporary files created during the update process.

To clean those .tmp files in C:\Windows\Temp do the following in CCleaner:
    -click Options > Include
    -click Add
-for "Drive or File" click Browse
-navigate to C:\Windows\Temp and click OK
-in the "File Types" section, click "File Types" (NOT "All Files")
-in the space provided next to "File Types" enter: av*.tmp;zlt*.tmp
-in the "Options" section, choose "Include Files Only"
    -click OK
In addition, I have the following setting in CCleaner:
-Options > Advanced, tick "Only delete files in Windows Temp....older than 24 hours"

Any files in use and locked by an application will not be deleted.

Be careful with CCleaner. Read about CCleaner on the piriform.com site: www.piriform.com
