Thread: [WORKAROUND] AVG Conflict Fix.

Thumbs up [WORKAROUND] AVG Conflict Fix.

I am using AVG 9.0 and ZoneAlarm free firewall. AVG did an automatic update this weekend and since then, I can barely access the internet. I have been reading up on this and the cause appears to be a conflict with AVG and ZoneAlarm. AVG says in their forum that they are waiting on an update from ZoneAlarm. Any one know anything about this? At is stands, I am going to have to remove and reinstall AVG to an older, less secure version.

I quit using AVG some years ago.. and am happy with the Anti-Virus that comes with the Paid version of Zone Alarm..

However, AVG is a well respected Product..
Have you contacted AVG Tech Support..

They may have added a new feature to Ver. 9.0 update that needs configuring to work with ZoneAlarm Free Basic Firewall?

    Updated automatically

    Hi GeorgeV,
Just joined here to say that the tech advisors over at AVG free forums are telling everyone to get rid of ZoneAlarm and saying the problem is with your firewall. They have made a stickie about it. I don't happen to agree, but people are confused. There are a lot of posts, and probably a lot more who can't post right now, because their computers are not able to connect to the internet.
Thought you might want to know.
    Sincerely,
    Gillie

Default avg9 blames za for internet access cutoff

    howdy y'all,

the folks over at the avg free forums say that za has claimed it is the cause of the inet access choke that occurs when you update acg9 with the most recent update.

here's a link to one such statement ...
    http://forums.avg.com/ww-en/avg-free...805#post_72805

za9 and avg9 worked _perfectly_ until this recent update and uninstalling avg9, reinstalling it AND PREVENTING IT FROM UPDATING still works spiffily.

so, are they blowing smoke up my tail?

    take care,
    lee

Sorry, two posts needed to go. This is a ZA user support forum on ZA product related issues. Other products issues or product policy or forum discussions/chat is outside the scope of this board.

Thank you in advance for your understanding and support.

Here are the 2 solutions that AVG is offering this compatibility issue:
    1. Uninstall the ZoneAlarm program
    2. Uninstall the LinkScanner component

    Default What worked for me

Here's what's working on my machine currently:

1- Disconnect from the internet and uninstall AVG completely.

2- Install an AVG 9.x version prior to the offending update, but DO NOT install the Link Scanner (uncheck the box for it during the install). I used version 9.0.730. I don't recommend using version 8.5 or earlier, as I've seen some customer's computers running older AVG versions that were hit by new malware variants.

3- Once AVG is installed, open the user interface and turn off the automatic updates. You'll probably want to right click on it after turning it off and select "Ignore the state of this component", so it doesn't flag this as an error, but this is cosmetic only.

4- Reconnect to the internet and click on Update Now. Uncheck the box for "Update Program", then update it.

5- You will need to run the update procedure manually periodically. Just make sure that "Update Program" is always unchecked.

So far, so good. I hope this helps.

Hopefully, this will be fixed soon.
