Angry Outlook Express 6.0 shuts down spontaneously...

    Hi there,

This is bugging me. Everytime I read my e-mails or write an e-mail, or do anything at all, Outlook Express shuts down without any warning. I've done antivirus and antispyware scans and I'm clean. Nothing.

Any thoughts? It is very annoying, especially when writing a long e-mail and it shuts down on you - have to start all over again...

    Thanks,
    Stormsy.

I use OE6 (6.00.2900.5512) on 2 PCs with ZAISS and have never had this problem!?!

I take it you are using WinXP. Are you up to SP3 and all critical MS updates?

Which ZA product and version are you using? I am running:

    ZoneAlarm Security Suite version:9.1.507.000
    TrueVector version:9.1.507.000
    Driver version:9.1.503.000
    Anti-virus engine version:8.0.2.48
    Anti-virus signature DAT file version:1014912576
    AntiSpam version:6.0.0.2383

How do you have Outbound MailSafe and the Junk E-mail Filter options set?

Finally, are you running any other a/v - a/s or firewall software on the PC? Doing so could cause a conflict.

Have you tried temporarily shutting down ZA to see if OE6 still crashes?

I'm using WinXP Home Ed, SP3, all updates installed from Microsoft.

    As for ZA;
    ZoneAlarm Security Suite: 9.1.008.000
    True Vector version: 9.1.008.000
    Driver Version: 9.1.008.000
    Anti-virus/Anti-spyware engine version: 8.0.2.42
    DAT File version: 1014966848
    Anti-Spam Version: 6.0.0.2383

('ve noticed that my ZA version is different from yours - I take it that there is a newer version out? But ZA hasn't notified me, I have it on automatic updates...)

E-mail protection is set on defult. Haven't touched it.

I have installed: SpyBot Search and Destroy, Malwarebytes' Anti-malware and SuperAnti Spyware but all of them are NOT running in real-time. When I use them, I turn ZA off first before running any scans.

Still confused as to why OE6 is doing it...

    Thanks,
    Stormsy.

SpyBot does have a resident component called Teatimer that could conflict with ZA. I removed SpyBot several years ago from my PCs.

The newer version I have just came out last week, but prior to that I had been running the version you have now. While running that version, OE6 never crashed on me.

Have you tried temporarily shutting down ZA to see if OE6 still crashes? That would be the first thing I would do.

As far as the new version of ZA, the notifications are rolled out systematically. I did not receive a notification either, but rather read about it on these forums. You can go ahead and download it yourself if you want to, but as I explained above, I doubt it will fix the OE6 crashing since it wasn't an issue for me or anyone else that has posted here on the forum. Still, its best to be running the most up to date version.

    I agree with user "Garywa"

there is an Explanation of the missing Upgrade Notice, posted in the "Helpful Hints and Links" section of the forum..

I know about TeaTimer - again that is only used if you have SpyBot running in real time protection.

I have a feeling that one of the files within OE6 could be corrupt. I remeber reading somewhere that a *.dax could be the problem but I cannot remember where I read it... ¬_¬ I shall have a look on the net at some point. It isn't a big deal - its annoying to say the least, but I can tolerate it for now.

    Thanks,
    Stormsy.

What about my other question - Have you tried temporarily shutting down ZA to see if OE6 still crashes? That would be the first thing I would do.

If OE6 still crashes with ZA shut down, then there are a few things you can try.

OE6 stores its email messages in .dbx files and yes, a corrupt .dbx file could cause OE6 to crash. Doing a 'Compact All Folders' from within OE6 will sometimes fix that. File-->Folders-->Compact All Folders

You can find the .dbx files here:

    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{Identity-GUID}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

By default, this is a hidden folder so you may have to unhide it in Windows Explorer to be able to see it. I would not recommend changing or doing anything with these files like editing or deleting. Doing so will absolutely corrupt OE6 and you'll be in a bigger mess. Backing them up is fine.

You might also try running the windows System File Checker to see if there is a corrupt OS file. click Start-->Run then enter sfc /scannow

You will need your original Windows XP installation CD to run the System File Checker.

Sorry, my apologies - I have tried OE6 with ZA turned off.

I will try the advice that you have offered. I appreciate your help

    Thanks,
    Stormsy.
