Thread: Windows 7 / ZES 9.1.603.000 Performance Issue if on router SMC7004BR

Default Windows 7 / ZES 9.1.603.000 Performance Issue if on router SMC7004BR

Equipment: router (SMC7004BR); HomeRun HD tuner; home-built system using ASUS/Intel ATOM 330 @1.6Ghz w/4GB RAM running Windows 7 Pro and ZES 9.1.603.000.

Symptoms: Login desktop displays after 3-5 minute wait (black screen till desktop appears); applications taking excessive time to start after double-clicking application icon; login to desktop performance is normal when network cable is disconnected from router; router is not connected to internet and is used for DHCP on home PAN; noted 'ZES is starting' dialogue box appearing several times when performance is poor; and wasn't an issue with previous version of ZES (9.1.507.000)

ZES firewall settings: Internet Zone set to High; Trusted Zone set to medium; enabled - gateway security check; not on a ICS/NAT network set; block all fragments set; allow VPN protocols set; filter 1394 traffic set; disable windows firewall set; IPv6 networking set; and ask which zone to place networks on detection set.

    1. Tried setting/unsetting IPv6 setting; no effect on poor performance.
    2. Replaced SMC router with LINKSYS WRT540GS wireless broadband router; turned off wireless access; and noted login to desktop performance appeared to be normal when connected to this router. Initially, placed router network to be treated like internet connection. I will continue to use this setup and watch for errors.

Is there a IPv4 protocol version that isn't supported with ZES version 603?

I want to continue to use the SMC router because it supports a dial-up backup connection to the internet (outgoing only, and is a security risk I know) if the WAN goes down. Does anyone have a 'clue' on what's wrong?

Thanks for any help anyone can give.

So the issue is only on SMC700? Was the router network set as trusted as you did with linksys? Have you tried to update the router firmware?
In case of no help here bt other users here you can contact, free of charge, the ZA technical support at the link in my signature.

Check with SMC manufacturer for any known issue with ZA

I agree with Guru Fax, advice..

However, there may be an additional Factor involved here..

Here is the Recommended Minimal System Requirements for ZA Extreme 9.1.603.000 with Windows 7 OS..

System Requirements for ZoneAlarm Extreme Security:

    Microsoft® Windows® 7*:
    32-bit / 64-bit , 2 GB RAM
    2 GHz or faster processor
    250MB of available hard-disk space

    In response to previous post:

At this time, ZA Xtreme security treats my PAN as a internet connection. I haven't set it to trusted yet. I will after I finish my internet 'surfing'. I haven't updated the SMC7004BR bios and will need to visit their site to get the latest version if available (device must be nearly 10 years old; can't find a build date on device). BTW, Windows 7 64-bit OS.

Thanks for your advice. I will post a reply on the SMC bios update later.

SMC7004BR router update: updated router BIOS to latest version found at SMC site; updated software didn't solve long delay to desktop with default settings; updated software didn't solve long delay to desktop after setting static IP address (router isn't attached to internet at all).

Noted: Older system WinXP SP3 system (PIII@433MHz w/1GB RAM) with ZES 9.1.008.000 displayed desktop faster than Win7 system (ATOM@1.6GHz w/4GB RAM) with ZES 9.1.603.000 connected to SMC router.

    Current Hypothesis: 1) ZES 9.1.603.000 network checks for NIC connection (or other network conditions), and commands router to establish a internet connect even if router has reported no internet connection available repeatedly before reaching max attempts limit (ET phone home);
or 2) ZA software isn't getting a expected router protocol response from the older SMC7004BR router (pre-2004 purchase) and is from the LINKSYS router (CISCO; 2005 purchase)

Current solution(s) available (giving support an opportunity to mark this as SOLVED): a) Uninstall ZES 9.1.603.000 on Win7/ATOM system and install previous version (ZES) that wasn't causing this condition; or b) Replace SMC7004BR router with WRT54GS (LINKSYS) router.

REPLACING CPU IS NOT AN OPTION.

    Hi!

sounds like the issue described here:
    http://forums.zonealarm.com/showpost...75&postcount=7

If that is the case there is not much that can be done.

In any case, you should keep following up with the official support (we are all users here), they may have suggestions or troubleshooting steps for you to try.

The post you referred to is the work-around I had to do until I changed my routers, which I performed for about half-a-day. I read another post that tracked down a slow boot to the start-up (?) file and I would use msconfig to add applications one at a time until I found which is causing the issue. Not willing to work that procedure yet.

For the moment, I will continue to use the WRT54GS router with the wireless turned off. When I get some time to continue diagnosing this issue, I plan to use 'wireshark' to record all network activity during the start-up file procedure and to record a baseline recording with the WRT54GS router.

    Thank you for your assistance.

Update from pjbrown925: Compared traffic between two versions of ZES to find IGMP packets on capture where 603 version was used. The packet destination address is 224.0.0.22 or 224.0.0.252. Used web to find IP is to IANA(?) whose address is in california. The info shown said it is a V3 Membership report. Dont know if this is what is slowing it down. Seems odd, to be polling 224.0.0.2 or 224.0.0.252.

Not a network expert but those are multicast IPs

Not sure this makes any sense to you it doesn't to me
