Default Zone Alarm Free 9.2 adds all programs

    Zone Alarm Free 9.2.057.000
    Windows XP SP2

I just downloaded and installed the new version and there is a new behavior that I really don't like, mainly because it's not very logical.

Every time I run a program, no matter what it is, Zone Alarm adds it to the Program control list. This makes policing the list a tiresome task. The only programs I want to see in the list are ones that have requested access to the internet. So that my list will show either a check or an "X" next to it. I have no need for 30-40 entries of programs that do not access the internet with "?" after it.

The only time Zone Alarm should add the program to the list is when it requests internet access. Why, oh why, do I need the Windows Calculator in the list? Along with about 30-40 other programs that I use regularly that don't access the internet.

When I'm having a problem with my computer and I need to check internet access, I'd rather look through 15-20 entries that 55-60.

Is there any way to turn off this option and only have Zone Alarm add the programs upon internet request?

    this might help..

Check your Program Control / Main tab settings

    Set Program Control to Maximum

Set Smart Defense Advisor to Manual and NOT Auto..

I am afraid but this looks by design.

Program Control will not go to Maximum in Zone Alarm Free.

Smart Defense is already set to Manual so that I can decide which
programs get access and not some list off in a cloud somewhere.

My current solution is to check the program list each day and to put
an "X" next to any program that shows "?" and doesn't need to access
the internet. This is rather annoying, but it will allow me to easily check
who has internet access if I run into any problems.

Oh yes, one additional gripe, I just found out about the check-box that
allows any Microsoft program access to the internet and found that it was
checked automatically. In my mind, that defeats the purpose of the
firewall's basic design for you to decide which programs have access on a
program by program basis. Oh well, box is unchecked now!

    Yes, it does. But why?

In the long ago I was a programming student in college and we were
actually taught about logic and things like KISS(Keep It Simple, Stupid!).
Computers didn't have that much memory, so programs had to be kept small.
Today with almost limitless memory available it seems that there is no
incentive to keep programs small and so everything is included, even the
    unneeded kitchen sink.

Why does the firewall need to add programs to its list that do not request
internet access? It doesn't. So why does it?

I'm sure the answer to this is going to indicate that the firewall doesn't but
the anti-virus part of the Zone Alarm Uber Version needs the information.
And since today's programmers don't have to write modular programs, with
each program being able to run independently of the other in the system,
everything is included whether it's needed or not.

    Is this the answer?

    Hello,

We added a new feature to ZA Free thats been in our paid products for many many years.

ZA Free now uses our Program adviser database to setup and configure your programs.

This makes Free ZA over 95% less noisy with pop ups for programs.

Its a proven and completely safe technology (been in use iver over 7 years in paid products) and will make your over all experience with Free ZA a much better one.
