Default Vsmon.exe High CPU usage while downloading

    Hello,

Ever since the last update for ZA Free vsmon.exe is elevating my CPU usage 50 - 80 % but only while downloading. Stop the download it drops back to normal. Never had a problem with ZA before on this pc.

No doubt it was the last update. Would a removal/ clean install remedy the issue?

    Thanks

    Windows XP Service Pack 2
    Zone Alarm version 9.2.057.000
True Vector security engine version 9.2.057.000
    Driver Version 9.2.035.000

It is Sometimes very Difficult to Diagnose and fix a Computer from halfway across the Country, without All the Details, without the ability to sit in front of your Computer monitor and see what's going on..

The CPU usage increase could be a result of many things?
Conflict with other Programs on your computer?

Limited available resources, Available Bandwidth, Dialup or Cable Modem, Time of day of download etc..

Also, you are now depending on a (UN-supported by Microsoft) version of Windows XP SP2.

Microsoft Ends Windows XP SP2 Support
UPDATE Windows XP to SP3 Now... there are over 300 NEW bug-fixes and patches to WinXP since SP2 was released.

As of July 13, 2010, Microsoft will no longer support Windows XP SP2,

Here is a Link for WinXP SP3 Update and Microsoft Instructions.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...ice-pack-3-sp3

After Updating Windows XP to SP3, Check Microsoft Updates for more Update patched after SP3..

Then you can Try a New install of Zone Alarm Free version 9.2.057.000 again..

Thank you for your timely response. I understand it can be very difficult to diagnose a problem with limited information...

The issue is none of the aforementioned possibilities. It's vsmon.exe and high processor utilization when downloading, that's it. Bandwidth/Download Speed stays consistent regardless of time of day. This machine is an old gaming rig so it's tweaked and tuned as such. (On start up only 21 processes running) Resources have never been a problem... They are now only a problem whilst downloading.

I have no doubt it's something to do with the last update...

    Try to run the http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/fr...load/clean.exe

to remove any left overs. You may need to do it in SAFE MODE. Run the tool as administrator (if on VISTA or windows7)

The safest procedure is to :

1.) Download the Latest installer preferably with IE Browser and (no Download Manager/accelerator like Get-Right, Livewire, Bit-Torrent, uTorrent) and save it to your Hard drive.

(MultiPlatform, installer will install on Both WinXP SP3 and Vista and Windows7)

    ZoneAlarm free updates

2.) Now Install the new update (clean) and Accept the default Setting, and Choose Trusted Zone, not Internet Zone.

A.)Finally check with a selective startup, You may have several other things running in the background that are causing VSMON to be active..

    1.) Click Start -> Run
2.) Type MSConfig in the run box and click OK
3.) Once in MSConfig, click the Startup Tab
4.) Remove the checks from everything except ZLClient
    5.) Click the Services Tab
6.) Place a check in "Hide All Microsoft Services"
7.) Now remove checks from everything other than TrueVector Internet
Monitor and ForceField (if present), and click OK.
    8.) Restart your computer

Once again, thank you for your prompt reply.

After completing the clean install my pc is still experiencing the same problem. The faster I am able to download a file, the more the CPU utilization increases by vsmon.exe

If I'm downloading and getting 850 KB/Sec CPU usage by vsmon is about 15%.

If I'm downloading a file at 2 MB/Sec CPU usage by vsmon is as high as 40%.

Other then when downloading vsmon CPU usage stays at 0.

I know vsmon.exe was guilty of excessive CPU usage in previous versions, although I was never affected...

Maybe there is some setting to allow your download and my local traffic without the excessive processing.
I was hoping there was a simple solution or work around for this issue. No such luck so far...

I've updated everything, tried multiple browsers, (even tried running Firefox in safe mode). Non browser based downloads also cause the same issue (D/L'ing an antivirus update for example)

If I download without vsmon.exe running CPU usage is minimal.

I'm still working away at a fix, through the process of elimination...
