    Default Problems after Installing Update

I have been using ZoneAlarm Free for a few months (Win 7 64bit). After updating it with zaSetup_92_057_000_en.exe I began having major problems.
All downloads would be corrupted files. When trying to access a logon web page with various browsers, I would get the page without the logon fields, without the password field, "SSL Encryption error, a blank page, and other errors. I could not get e-mail through my MSN browser. I could not create windows restore points or do a windows restore. I could not update windows (corrupted file download). After running many virus / malware checking programs I finally uninstalled ZoneAlarm. All of the problems went away.

Probably a corruption of the ZA settings, next time simply try a ZA database reset:

1.) Hold down the Ctrl and Shift keys together
2.) Right click on the ZA icon near your clock
3.) Choose 'Reset' from the box that comes up
4.) Choose Yes on the Reset Settings dialog box
5.) When prompted, choose OK to restart your system
6.) Follow the on screen configuration prompts after reboot

Before install ZA ensure you have these hot fixes from Microsoft installed:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976759
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/979278
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/981889

They fix bugs in Windows 7 related to third party firewalls.

Finally try to install ZA without the toolbar (custom install)

    Cheers,
    Fax

I installed the hotfixes, after making a disk image backup. Then tried installing ZoneAlarm from the file I already had. It immediately said I needed service pack 1 (which won't be released until next year). I deleted the file and downloaded a new copy. Then I tried installing it (without the toolbar). It got to 33% and stopped. The keyboard and mouse buttons were inoperable. (This was another problem I had occasionally experienced after 1st updating ZoneAlarm.) After rebooting I tried installing ZA again. It said it couldn't remove the copy running. I rebooted and uninstalled ZA. I tried installing again. This time it froze at 32%, keyboard and mouse froze too. After rebooting I tried uninstalling ZA, but it said the program wasn't available and had probably been uninstalled. When I tried to remove it from the list it said I didn't have the authorization to do that. (I was logged in as administrator.) Then I discovered I couldn't access the internet with any program. At that point I had to restore my drive from the backup.
