Thumbs up [Solved] vsmon eats >50% of CPU when playing 720p video - Remove Ad Muncher

    As in subject.
Vsmod can eat over 50% of CPU and can freeze/hardly slowdown PC when playing 720p video on YouTube or other video sites. It really consumes a lot of resources these days.
But it mostly happens with 720p video in browser.

    My spec:
    Core 2 Duo E8400
    Browser - Firefox 3.6.8
    OS - Windows XP SP3
    ZoneAlarm Extreme Edition 9.3.014.000

    This is not surprising.

You tube video in 720 and higher is notorious for using a lot of CPU cycles and resources.

Since this is streaming and all packets are being inspected by the firewall and by the AV engine and in 9.x the AV engine resources are now in VSMON this behavior is normal and expected.
and will result in VSMON using more resources.

Many other factors go into play such as video card, CPU, memory, and OS thats running.

I checked. It happens even when sites are loading. I downloaded 2 files - 30-40% of CPU is owned by vsmon,
There's really something wrong with this new version.

    Hello,

Well its not a general bug in the program.

    I personally can use a P4 3mhz with 2mb memory and XP Sp3

With the latest version of adobe flash (very important)

    Firefox 3.6.8

VSMON jumps around 25 35 and 49 % CPU utilization while playing a youtube 720P video

We don't see this as an issue at all and is normal.

If I switch the same video to 360p
utilization by VSMON rarely goes above 10% average is about 6%

So you see HD video is a hog on your PC resources. Its not ZA that creates these issues with video.

This will also vary greatly on your setup. Yours could be better or worse than my one example.

If your watching a HD video stream 50% CPU utilization is not a big deal. If you must do other things while watching then switch down to a less intensive video stream like 360p

Ok, I discovered what was the issue.
It was Ad Muncher. He was responssible for slowdown. I just removed from his protection Firefox and everything is all right now.

    Thanks for help.
