Default ZA EXtreme 9.3 / XPSP3: Updates slowing my system

I am running ZA Extreme Security v9.3.014.000 in Windows XP Home (v2002, sp3). Ever since I installed it early this month I have had a problem where 10 minutes after I start my PC, ZA starts downing updates and brings everything to a grinding halt. My computer is basically frozen, and I can't even bring up the task manager to see what is going on. Most of the time after 10 minutes I simply re-boot the machine. Very frustrating. This is all new since I installed the latest version. I have seen other postings that mention vsmon giving the problem. I don't know if that is it, but my symptoms are seemingly exactly the same as they describe.
