Default Can't completely uninstall ZoneAlarm

I ran into the same problem as others this week that my Explorer did not work (V6 I believe, I'm on Windows XP) and I got the following message:

Validation failed for C:\Windows\system32\VSINIT.dll. You probably are missing a necessary root certificate,"

I then came across this thread:

http://forums.zonelabs.com/zonelabs/...ssage.id=87475

and followed the instructions to manually uninstall Zonelab (my free version of ZoneAlarm). I did have to manually delete the entries for ZoneAlarm in the START menu (for some reason this didn't delete when I manually followed the instructions in the above thread). And I did run into the problem (step 18)
that I couldn't delete the "Internet Logs" folder on first try as it says that some files are currently in use. However, I managed to delete it after doing a restart.

Then I scanned the PC and downloaded the free ZoneAlarm update from:

http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/fre...seHistory.html

This was only a 256kb file. When asked I said to download and install the software. I did this twice because after the download I followed the installation wizard but only got to the stage where 11% were installed. Then I get the following message:

"You have ZoneAlarm Pro 6.1.737.000 currently installed on your computer which cannot be upgraded. Please uninstall ZoneAlarm Pro and restart the ZoneAlarm Pro installation"

Then I decided to only download the file and install later. I did this and got the same error message. When I then immediately tried to install again I was told that another install was currently running and I couldn't do another install request. I then waited a couple of minutes and launched the install again. This time I was prompted to restart the computer after I reached the 11% installation stage. I repeated this twice but all I'm getting is the same message:

"You have ZoneAlarm Pro 6.1.737.000 currently installed on your computer which cannot be upgraded. Please uninstall ZoneAlarm Pro and restart the ZoneAlarm Pro installation"

Then followed by the prompt to do
a restart. It's like I'm caught in a never ending cycle. I never had version 6.1XXX of ZoneAlarm. I only had version 6.0XXX from July 2005 before all the problems started. I have since upgraded to Explorer V 8 as I was pompted to do so by the Windows updates I installed.

I do not have the CD for the original version of ZoneAlarm I installed in 2005. I think this came free with a computer magazine. But after following the uninstallation precedure in the above thread I thought that my PC didnt' have any ZoneAlarm installed anymore. So, why can I not simply download and install the new version of free ZoneAlarm?

Can anyone help, please?

Problem:

This issue is related to ZoneAlarm version 6.5 and below ONLY.

As of 7/15/09 if your running any ZoneAlarm product version 6.5 or Below.

You may receive the following error message:

Validation failed for C:\Windows\system32\VSINIT.dll. You probably are missing a necessary root certificate,

Thiscouldbe followed by the same message but for vsdata.dll.

Solution:

ZoneAlarm 6.5 or below can no longer function.

Un-install your version of ZoneAlarm and if you have a valid genuine ZoneAlarm license key in good standing you will need to upgrade and download version 8.0.400.020

Note: Windows ME, 98, 98se and Windows 2000are not supported in ZoneAlarm version 8.0

Hi,

You wrote, "Un-install your version of ZoneAlarm and if you have a valid genuine ZoneAlarm license key in good standing you will need to upgrade and download version 8.0.400.020":

- I purchased a license for ZA around 2005. Currently I have ZoneAlarm ver 6 installed. So it has a "valid genuine ZoneAlarm license key" for Version 6.
- But, is my license key expired which would mean my ZoneAlarm license is not "in good standing"?
- Do I have to purchase a new license and upgrade to the newest version?
- Or, can I install the latest version of ZoneAlarm and then manually enter my existing License key from Version 6?

Thank you.

Hi George,
So, what you're saying is that even though I followed your instructions to manually remove Zone Alarm from my PC I might still need to run this file:
http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/fr...cpes_clean.exe
to completely remove it, right?
So, once I've done this there should be no reason for me to have a license key as I'm just using and downloading the free version of the software from your website, right?
I hope this works but my concern is that the message I received said that I had a previous version of Zone Alarm on my PC which is not the version I actually had. I hope there isn't something else goign on. Will try this tonight.

2.) you don't need a Key for the New Zonalarm Free Ver. 8.0 (However, Be aware that part of the Install process will ask you if you want to Try a 15 day Trial of ZoneAlarm Pro)If all you want is just the Free Firewall, then pay close attention when installing and Do not Agree to the 15 day Trial part.otherwise after the 15 days you will be asked to Buy a License for ZAPro..Good luck..Good luck..

I wish I would have known BEFORE manually uninstalling ZA that I had to change those settings. I don't think you mentioned this in the instructions I followed in this thread:
http://forums.zonelabs.com/zonelabs/...ssage.id=87475
Anyway, I ran the cleanup file.
Not sure whether it worked because all I could hear was a sound and that was it when I ran the file. But in any case, I then tried to install the new ZA software and get the same message as soon as I hit the 11% installation stage....something about having a previous ZA software installed that cannot be upgraded.
I must say that I am getting increasingly frustrated. If you do decide to discontinue an old version of ZA I would think that you should at least inform your customers about this IN ADVANCE rather than just creating all this choas over night. I haven't been able to use the internet on my PC since last week and I urgently need to fix this ZA problem.
So, is there a way I can MANUALLY delete whatever is left of my old ZA version in order to re-install the new version. I can't get past the 11% stage...

Here is the CheckPoint Knowledgebase Removal method..http://server.iad.liveperson.net/hc/...mp;action=view

This applies to

All ZoneAlarm products
Windows 2000/XP

Summary

I need to completely remove ZoneAlarm, or there are remnants of
ZoneAlarm on my system

Solution

If possible, first try to uninstall ZoneAlarm normally from your Start
Programs ZoneAlarm menu. If this fails, or you want to ensure that all
ZoneAlarm files were removed from the system properly, continue with the
steps below.

Please make sure that you have the latest version downloaded first:

http://www.zonealarm.com/trial

01.) Restart your computer
02.) When you see the screen go black and it starts booting back up keep
tapping the "F8" key (at the top of your keyboard)
03.) This should bring up a menu. Choose Safe Mode off the menu by
using the arrow keys on the keyboard to highlight Safe Mode and press
Enter
04.) If you get a message asking to go to Safe Mode, choose Yes. If you
get a help and support window, close this.
05.) Once you are at the desktop, Click Start, My Computer
06.) Click Tools, Folder Options, View Tab
07.) Place a dot next to "Show Hidden Files and Folders"
08.) Remove the check from "Hide Protected Operating System Files
(Recommended)"
09.) Choose Yes to the warning
10.) Click OK
11.) Double click C:

Note: In the future steps if you do not see any files or folders, please click
the "Show Files" link to view them.

12.) Double Click the Program Files Folder
13.) Right Click the Zone Labs Folder (if present), click Delete, and choose
Yes

NOTE: If you cannot delete the entire folder, please open the Zone Labs -
> ZoneAlarm folder and delete out as many of the files listed here as
possible.

14.) Close this window
15.) Click Start, My Computer
16.) Double Click the C:
17.) Double Click the Windows Folder (It may also be WinNT)
18.) Right Click the Internet Logs Folder, click Delete, and choose Yes
19.) Double Click the System32 Folder
20.) Right Click the Zone Labs Folder (if present), click Delete, and choose
Yes

NOTE: If you cannot delete the entire folder, please open the Zone Labs
folder and delete out as many of the files listed here as possible.

21.) Locate and delete the following files in the System32 folder if they are
present:

- vsconfig.xml
- vsxml.dll
- vsregexp.dll
- vsdata.dll
- vsdata95.vxd
- vsdatant.sys
- vsmonapi.dll
- vspubapi.dll
- vsinit.dll
- vsutil.dll
- vswmi.dll
- zlcommdb.dll
- zlcomm.dll
- **bleep**.dat
- zpeng24.dll

22.) Clear your Temp Directory per the instructions below.

- Go to Start -> Run
- Type %temp% and click OK
- Select all of these files and delete them

23.) Clear the Prefetch folder per the instructions below (Windows XP only).

- Go to Start -> Run
- Type Prefetch and click OK
- Select all of these files and delete them

24.) Remove the necessary registry entries:

*Important Advisory: Deleting registry entries incorrectly may cause
serious problems to your operating system, which may necessitate the
need to reinstall it. Please make sure you are able to perform these
deletions correctly before you decide to edit the entries. If you are not
sure, you should seek help from someone who is familiar with editing the
registry.

For information about how to edit the registry in Windows, from your
desktop, click Start -> Run -> and type regedit. Click on Help -> Help
Topics. Under the Contents tab, click Change Keys and Values (this may
be found under the How to... section).

Also, you should always make a backup of the registry before editing it.
You can find this in the same section of the Help files.

To remove the needed registry entries, go to Start -> Run and type in
regedit. Choose OK, and use the folders on the left side of the Registry
Editor window to navigate to the specified directories below. Note that you
will remove the entire folder specified (eg, Zone Labs, vsmon, vsdatant):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Zone Labs
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\vsmon
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\vsdatant

25.) Close this window, then empty your recycle bin.
26.) Restart the computer.
27.) Try to install the latest version again
