Default ZoneAlarm pages and Hosts File

Since I installed the Hosts File from
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm I cannot access various pages on the ZoneAlarm website.

Examples are Support Centre Knowledge Base, New ZoneAlarm Support Centre pages at

    http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en-us/support/technical-support-zonealarm-pc-security-free-firewall.htm

    and

I cannot find or run the ZoneAlarm uninstall program (XP/2000)

The message I get is "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"

I installed the Hosts File for extra security, so it's ironic that it's blocking pages on a security website.

    Any suggestions?

    thanks

    qb

Thanks for the obvious. Inserting # in front of the problem line isn't really the answer. OK it'll get rid of the problem accessing the ZoneAlarm sites, but it also opens the door to everything else.
Why does ZoneAlarm use this when it's clearly a security risk?

There is probably a misunderstanding. Which security risk? The server mentioned is used by major service providers like IBM, Microsoft, Verizon, and a long list of major comporations. The live chat application used by ZA (using the same servers as the ZA KB) needs to know if you are still online or not while chatting with the support representative. Cookies may be also used (support tickets recording). This is why is probably listed. There is nothing dangerous, no spyware will be installed on your system nor there is any security risk.

It is important you choose a security product that you can trust. If you start having doubts about ZA then its better you remove it instantly from your system and use a tool you can feel confortable with.

It is usually not recommended to mess with the hosts file or other overlapping tools. This is especially if you cannot distinguish between safe and false positives or the origin of the problem including cookies considerations. Try instead mastering you first line of defense you don't really need having black list of sites especially because they can cause problems and mulfunction that, as you have seen, you will not be able to foresinc so easily.

I will close this thread soon, since the issue has been addressed. Please do not hesitate to open a new thread if you have any other ZA PRODUCT related question or contact, free of charge, the official ZA technical support at the link in my signature.

    Thanks,

Ok. No problems with ZoneAlarm - only concern that something tagged as unsafe elsewhere was on the ZoneAlarm website. But I take your point. I installed the extended host file as an experiment, but it does seem to take a nuclear bomb to crack a walnut approach. That said, I've only experienced two total blocks so far. But as both were probably unnecessary - one was ZoneAlarm, the other was Tesco - I'm now having a rethink.
    thanks for your help
