Default [SOLVED] ZA Extreme. Kills internet connection --> Bad install

Hi. I just reformatted my hard drive, installed Windows XP Home and yesterday I installed ZA Extreme. Once I rebooted my desktop, ZA Extreme appears to have killed my internet connection. I can't access the internet at all and each internet connection icon has now a "lock" and a red X icon next to it and in the description it says "network cable unplugged, firewalled". I uninstalled ZAE and still it says firewalled. I have tried everything to get my internet connection back. I called Charter and they said that's a Microsoft problem or Zone Alarm problem. Everything was running fine until I installed Zone Alarm Extreme and rebooted. I think this product is too EXTREME. I didn't set custom settings, just the plain installation defaults. By the way I'm using the 30 day trial which started on 10-19-2010.

    Hi!

did you update XP with Service Packs and patches before installing ZAX? Or it was done only after? Which version of ZAX was installed?
Internet connection icon from where? XP? Dedicated software coming with your modem/router/wireless usb key?

Red X icon (if ZA), means your ZAX firewall driver is broken and ZA not working.

Fully remove ZAX, run the dedicated removal tool you find here:
    http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/fr...cpes_clean.exe

Double check that all ZA related files/folders are gone:

    1.) Restart your computer
2.) When you see the screen go black and it starts booting back up keep
tapping the "F8" key (at the top of your keyboard)
3.) This should bring up a menu. Choose Safe Mode off the menu by
using the arrow keys on the keyboard to highlight Safe Mode and press
    Enter
4.) If you get a message asking to go to Safe Mode, choose Yes. If you
get a help and support window, close this.
5.) Double Click the Program Files Folder
6.) Right Click the Zone Labs Folder, click Delete, and choose Yes

NOTE: If you cannot delete the entire folder, please open the Zone Labs --> ZoneAlarm folder and delete out as many of the files listed here as
    possible.

    7.) Close this window
    8.) Click Start, My Computer
    9.) Double Click the C:
10.) Double Click the Windows Folder (It may also be WinNT)
11.) Right Click the Internet Logs Folder, click Delete, and choose Yes
12.) Double Click the System32 Folder
13.) Right Click the Zone Labs Folder, click Delete, and choose Yes
NOTE: If you cannot delete the entire folder, please open the Zone Labs
folder and delete out as many of the files listed here as possible.
    14.) Click Start, Computer
    15.) Double Click C:
16.) Double Click the Program Files Folder
17.) Double Click the Checkpoint Folder
18.) Right click onZAForceField folder, click Delete, and choose Yes
19.) Clear your Temp Directory per the instructions below.

    - Go to Start --> Run
    - Type %temp% and click OK
    - Select all of these files and delete them

20.) Clear the Prefetch folder per the instructions below.

    - Go to Start --> Run
    - Type Prefetch and click OK
    - Select all of these files and delete them

    21.) Empty your recycle bin.
    22.) Restart the computer.

23.) ZAX does not play nice with many other security tools. They may block its correct functioning including updates. For example, spyware doctor, spysweeper, trojan hunter, win patrol, PCtools Threat Fire, Mcafee, Norton, Symantec, Adaware, SpybotS&D, WinPatrol, AVG, Avast free, NOD, Kaspersky, Comodo, Rising, PC Doctor, MS Security Essential, AVIRA and many others. If you want to troubleshoot issues with ZA please remove these tools (not enough to disable) and install back (if you really need) only after you see your ZA is working as it should. Double check you have really removed all other security tools by running this utility
    http://www.appremover.com/

24.) Turn ON windows firewall and fully update your XP with ALL SPs and patches. Do not install other software. If you need to install a software please specify which one you did.

25.) Clean your system and registry with ccleaner.com
    http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/slim

26.) Doble check your internet connection works now.

    27). Re-download the ZAX installer
    http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/fr...SPSetup_en.exe

28). Install with default settings do NOT alter them. After re-boot go to ZA antivirus/antispyware and 'Update Now' and do not restore any previous ZA settings.

Thanks the help. I had already figured out on my own and reinstalled ZA Extreme. Now I have a problem with accessing a site. This is my site which I noticed can be accessed with proxies and my analytics tells me people are visiting it fine. Since I reinstalled ZA Extreme I can't access it. I think it is blocked somehow. Is there some sort of blacklist on ZA I can look into to whitelist my site? Been looking but can't find a thing. Thanks.

There are no specific filters that block silently website in ZAX. You will normally see a warning (or at least a banner) notifying you about the issue.
So, this unlikely caused by ZAX

Please post the site to test it.

Thank you for your prompt help. I'm sorry, my problems were not ZA Extreme related. My first problem was from Windows Firewall creating problems I think. It also took over after Zone Alarm E. uninstallation (that was the "lock" icon and "firewalled" description shown under the "Local Area Connection" icon under "network connections" in control panel). The second issue was just mod security on my VPS blocking my ip address so I could not access my site.

Thanks again and sorry for wasting your time.

No problem! I am glad to hear you sorted it out.
I am closing this thread since the issue is resolved. Do not hesitate to open a new thread for any other ZA related issue.

For best security settings with your ZA Extreme please see here:
xyz was not detected. What I should do?

The manual is at this link:
